iPhone Game Review: Bug Heroes Reviewed by ninjackid
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a bug? Gee, those little guys have it pretty tough, don't they? They got to scavenge around for food, avoid predators, phew. But being a bug sure does make for a really fun game.
Bug Heroes currently has two game modes, 'Adventure' which is the main game mode where you must defend your food stash from enemy bugs, collect money to upgrade your three heroes, Spider, Ant and Beetle, and to survive as long as possible; 'Coliseum' mode in which you choose one hero and have to survive against waves and waves of enemies, upgrading and leveling up that one hero.
One unique characteristic about Bug Heroes is that the game really is a huge blend of lots of different genres. You control the heroes like your average dual stick shooter, but this is definitely not like any dual stick shooter we've ever seen. The gameplay blends RPG and tower defense elements into a shooter game. As you progress you can level up in Adventure mode with each hero's abilities, and you can use money from killing bugs or completing side 'quests' like 'collect so many coins' and such to upgrade or buy new turrets or new weapons and abilities for the heroes.
Each hero also has his own specialty, for example, Beetle is strong and has tough armor, but walks slowly. Spider is fast and her swords can pierce through thick armor, but her armor is light and Ant is the only hero that has a ranged attack.
Each hero has lots of abilities and upgrades such as Ant Hole for Ant, which allows him to teleport back to the food stash, Adrenaline for Beetle which when used makes him faster and stronger and Iron Hood for Spider, which increases her armor and a lot more. There are also upgrades for each hero's main weapon along with lots more different abilities.
All these genres come together perfectly to create a totally unique and really fun experience.
Graphics & Sound
The graphics for Bug Heroes are amazingly polished, there is a night/day cycle in which everything looks great.
There are four current areas, Kitchen, Office, Playroom and Yard. Each with different elements like a cat outside that sleeps at night, or a toy robot in the playroom. All environments look well designed and beautifully rendered.
The sound is also done well, with a good music track that enhances the games theme and great sound effects. The bugs also talk every so often, giving each own its unique personality.
Bug Heroes is unlike any other game we've seen for the iOS so far. It's definitely recommended for fans of any action game.
