iPhone Game Review: Uber Racer 3D - Sandstorm Reviewed by JJ Robbins
Uber Racer 3D - Sandstorm is a post-apocalypse racer developed by Mad-Processor. Set in a time period where all resources are gong except a few drops of oil, and you will have to race to gain this last resource. One great thing about this racer game is that the game is universal for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
Uber Racer 3D - Sandstorm starts in a post apocalyptic time period. So money in the game is non-existent. You have to win races to get the only resource left..OIL. It's really ironic when you think about the concept of racing for oil where you spend the resource you are trying to gain. The game has a mad max type of feeling. The vehicles are all buggy like; bigger cars and trucks with huge wheels and suspensions. You can buy upgrades for your car. Fast speeds, better stuff to win races.
You race in ten unique environments, such as wastelands to destroyed cities. The races are somewhat fun although we had anticipated better racing experience. You have so many laps you have to finish. To get oil you must be in the top three. Sounds simple right? Wrong. Each race usually ended the same way in our tests. The biggest culprit in making this is the control. It goes like this: you start off in the lead, everything looks good; then as you come to a sharp turn where the control gets the better of you, and you loose the lead, every single time. The accelerometer control is very twitchy which results you to either tilt too strong or too weak. It?s a shame really because the controls are very easy to learn. We hope this gets tweaked in future updates.
There are four race modes: Time trail, elimination, 1 vs 1 and race. Each race mode is fun, and the variety ensures that both hardcore racers and casual gamers find something to play and like in the game, though for a hardcore gamer, the gameplay can become a little repetitive.
Graphics & Sound
Overall the graphics and the physics of the game work well together. The graphics are no means groundbreaking, but they showcase some really cool physics engine and some destructive models, like doors flying. They look good on iPod touch 4G and should look as good of better on the iPhone 4 or the iPad. The touch controls are very responsive.
The music tracks give the game an epic fast paced feel. The sound effects for the cars engines are very bold, it's a joy to hear them accelerate and then listen to the backfire. Reminds me of my lawnmower. But Mad Processor Games have implemented 3D sound. It helps you in telling where other cars are positioned on the track whether they?re behind you or in front. It works very well and represented where the vehicles are pretty much perfectly, especially if you play the game through stereo speakers. The songs however may get boring after awhile.
Uber racer is a great game for fans of racers. If you can over look some of the issues such as the accelerometer twitchiness it's actually a very well done and playable game. You can replay it for a while and try maps with different vehicles. For $4.99 it's one of the better games you will find on the app store for that price. Right now it's on sale for $1.99 which is a Great price.
