iPhone Game Review: Zombie Runaway Reviewed by JadeDragon
There are many zombie-themed games for the iOS devices, but Zombie Runaway from Com2uS is very different from the others. It's a 3D dashing game where you, as a freakishly cute zombie, run in a graveyard through littered gravestones and try to survive for as long as you can while collecting some cool stuff. It's a refreshingly different take on the "Zombie Games" genre and a very addictive game.
Zombie Runaway is a very simple game. You can literally open up the app and just start running. As you race through the dark graveyard you realize that with the increasing speed you will soon bump into headstones or worse, the spiky blocks that smell certain death. You will need to be fast with your reflexes and move left, right and jump to avoid hitting the deadly obstacles. Fortunately you will get boosters along the way also. Once you pick up a booster item, you become indestructible and will have fun watching the headstones crushed under your power!
Zombie Runaway mixes things up a bit in the gameplay by offering a normal race mode and a Blitz mode. It's a good idea to start in the normal mode to get used to the controls and learn about the gameplay. But once you've got a few races under your belt, Blitz mode offers the instant gratification that veteran players crave. In this mode, you get a lot of boosters and gain more life by crushing as many headstones as you can, and unlock the many hidden items/badges a lot quicker. Once these items are unlocked, you can use them in both game modes and the game becomes incredibly fun and addictive.
Com2uS did a great job at making you want to play just one more game to unlock the hidden items which bring new features to the game. There are items that modify the looks of your zombie, like different outfit and hats, or he wears an axe or a guitar halfway through his skull, or his head is a giant fish or dinosaurs. How about one item that makes him run backwards and you see the cute face of your zombie? As you guessed, there are ton of booster items like rockets, unicycle or more. The more coins and items you pick up, the faster your zombie runs and eventually he runs at a neck breaking speed that challenge your reflexes to the max.
Controls are very simple in Zombie Runaway, there are large left and right buttons with a jump button in the middle. The game plays in portrait mode only, and it?s best played with two hands if you want to survive long enough to unlock all the hidden items.
Graphics & Sound
The cartoonish cute graphics play a big role in Zombie Runaway?s overall polished package. The character is very well designed with different outfit, hats and other headgears to match the cute personality. The game wouldn?t be nearly as enjoyable if your zombie weren?t this cute. The running animations run smoothly and controls are responsive.
Zombie Runaway has some generic fast beat sound tracks to go with your fast racing, but the sound FX spices up the audio nicely. Your zombie dude seems to be having so much fun even with all the tombstones in his way and bumping him here and there that you he?s giddy with audible excitement. Sound effects mixed very well with the gameplay and booster FX and voice-overs add a lot of fun.
For a casual game, Zmobie Runaway hits the mark with addictive gameplay, fun character and audio, and plenty of challenges to come back for. It?s simple to pick up and play but takes time to master, a perfect combo that will please both casual gamers and the hardcore achievement chasers. If you are in the mood for an intense workout for your reflex and a quirky original title, Zombie Runaway provides plenty of both!
