iPhone Game Review: Subsolar
Reviewed by Epox

Tenshi Noir, the developer of critically acclaimed Love Battle Princess, has decided to explore deep space once more but this time around gave the game a different name. So those of your who love playing but are ambarrassed to get caught playing Love Battle Princess can play Subsolar in daylight and without hiding in a cave. With gorgeous backgrounds and themes, Subsolar is just as good as Love Battle Princess.

Subsolar, is an easy to pick up game but if you want to try and compete for high-scores you need to plan and score accordingly. There is lengthy and in-depth tutorial that covers all aspects of the game. The controls are pretty simple, you have to tap on the screen to collect blue photons which give you point, you have to tap three times before you are allowed to collect the points. But, it gets complicated because the blue photons cannot reach the bottom of the screen, if it does you lose one of your three lives. Another way you would lose your lives is if you tap on a red photon. There are also super red photons which are even harder to destroy.

The controls are very responsive and easy to use which is always good for casual gaming. Also, another way to earn more points is by acquiring more and more photons in a chain. You can also make super photons by making big chains of regular photons, super photons when put in a chain give you more points. There are three different power-ups in the game and each with its own unique use: the green star photon replenishes your energy, the blue star photon will give you a bunch of super photons, and the yellow star photon will produce a shock-wave.

Also, on the top-right you have a super-power which will allow you to unleash a super ability. This ability varies from planet to planet. For more advanced gamers, there are also vortex?s which allow you to suck in blue photons. But there is a limit to how many blue photons a vortex can hold, if you feed a vortex too many it will explode and send photons shooting all over the place.

The gameplay is deep and there are many elements which you can use, the arcade mode gets very addictive once you get the hang of it and you will keep wanting to come back to beat your high-score. There are also different planets which you can unlock, each has its own special super-power. Also, another bonus is Game Center integration and a bunch of missions in where you have to do certain things with the photons.

The graphics are great and is optimized with full retina display. If you have played Love Battle Princess, the graphics in Subsolar won?t seem new to you. That?s not to say that the backgrounds won?t impress you since they are just as gorgeous as those in LBP. There are unlockable wallpapers also and you can get them by beating the missions.

The music for this game is excellent and immensely fun to listen to it. It matches the overall theme of the game while maintaining its uniqueness and creativity. The music is really one of best soundtracks we?ve seen in iOS games. Also, you can listen to your iPod while playing the game.

Subsolar is a fun arcade game that will please all types players and it gets very addictive once you mastered the gameplay. The game is not as attractive if you bought Love Battle Princess as they have a very similar gameplay and style, but if you are not into the them in which Love Battle Princess was built on then check out Subsolar. The gameplay itself is unique and deep and will keep you interested.

Playing Hints and Tips:

Make a lot of super photons and use a chain of photons to destroy the red photons. Also, always be aware of the bottom of the screen and if the blue photons are near falling off. Use vortex?s to your advantage, they are immensely helpful while scoring points (but be careful).
