iPad Game Review: Big Boss
Review by Steven Scarpitti

Big Boss is all about laying waste to the happy villagers of the Trogon Kingdom and their entire kingdom is out to bring you down. Regardless of if it's the knights and archers or if it's their wizards turning a helpless villager into a giant of destruction just like you.

Big Boss offers a unique and fun gaming experience, it's a beat'em up game at its core but offers more than just that. As you play through the main story mode, you will level up your Big Boss character and by doing so you will unlock different kinds of creatures to evolve your character into as well as more types of equipment to use with your Big Boss character. The different creatures your character can evolve into have different kinds of special powers and obviously look very different, your choice of equipment will also have an effect on your characters appearance and stats. These different variations all help keep the game fun and interesting.

One of the unique things about this game is it has you playing the role of the evil invading big boss monster out to destroy the kingdom, this is a nice opposite side of the road approach since in most games you are fighting to destroy the big evil boss monster. The game does a good job of keeping this feeling by making most of your enemies hordes of small knights and archers, there are also the occasional princesses to eat and barrels to throw at the hordes. Every once in awhile the game throws a castle with a battering ram coming out the front gate or a villager turned into a big boss by a wizard in your way and these are normally the mid-level or end-level boss.

Big Boss also does a great job of offering extra content, there is a short North Pole Kingdom to play through besides the main Trogon Kingdom portion of the game. While the North Pole is only four levels, it offers a nice alternative when you want something besides or after the main story levels. Big Boss also features two difficulties (normal and hard) and three mini games to unlock by playing through the main game. These mini games are Falling Heroes, Run Hero Run, and the Arena, these are fun mini games that feature different portions of the main games gameplay. There are three different save slots in which to choose to save your game.

Big Boss has nice bright and vivid colors that have a great cartoon feel and fit the game perfectly. There are two method of control to choose from, gesture controls and a virtual d-pad. Both methods of control work well and the gesture controls are very accurate but they do take a little getting use to.

The background music and sound effects fit the game well and are of a high production value, making you feel like you're playing a console game. The only thing really missing is the ability to play your own music, so hopefully that will come in an update.

Overall Big Boss is a solid beat'em up game that has a unique twist that should really appeal to fans of the genre and to almost every gamer. This game is easily worth the purchase price and I would recommend it to casual gamers and brawlers alike.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: -4- Nice cartoon look.
Sound: -4- High production value, nice and fitting.
Controls: -5- Two ways to play and they both work well.
Gameplay: -5- Fun and fresh almost the entire game.

Playing Hints and Tips:

As I mentioned in the review there are two kingdoms to play though, so if you get stuck on a level try playing the other kingdom or just replay previous levels to save some money and buy new equipment to help make the game easier.
