Enercell is RadioShack's exclusive brand of battery products, and it now offers portable Lithium Ion rechargeable battery packs for the iPhone, iPod and iPad products. The Enercell Portable Power Bank battery pack for iPhone and iPod has 1800mAh capacity with actual output of 1066mAh 5.32Wh to your iPhone and iPod. We tested the portable battery pack with an iPhone 4 for this review.
The Enercell Portable Power Bank battery for iPhone and iPod has a slim body measuring 2.9 x 2.4 x 0.5 inches. The slim battery pack has a soft surface that feels good in hand and is not slippery. The Enercell has a very nice design that includes a slide up cap that protects the build-in 30-pin connector and a built-in USB that slides out for charging and tucks in when it?s done charging. This design provides all the functions you will need from a portable battery pack yet comes in a very clean form without any additional cable.
The Enercell Portable Power Bank battery pack has four LED lights and a LED button. The LED lights indicate battery power level for both when the battery pack is charging and for when it?s powering your iDevice. The LED lights are turned on when it?s either being charged or when it?s charging your iPhone or iPod. If you need to see the battery level when the battery is in standby, press the LED button to see the level. When all 4 LED lights are green, the battery has 100% power; when 3 LED lights are green and 1 is red, the battery has 75% power; and so on.
The Enercell Portable Power Bank battery pack for iPhone 4 has a decent battery power that can give your iPhone 4 an additional 6 hours of run time on average. The 1800mAh capacity battery also charges at a decent speed via USB from a desktop computer, and it holds power quite well in standby. The battery pack has protection against voltage, current and temperature overloads, and out puts 5.32Wh, 5VDC to your iDevice. We tested it with an iPhone 4 (AT&T version) and with the battery pack in full capacity, our iPhone 4 got about 70% of a full charge from the Enercell.
While it?s very easy to charge the Enercell battery pack and easy to charge the iPhone or iPod, one thing the design creates a bit of hassle for users is that the 30-pin connector has no room for device in a case. We tried various style cases with the iPhone 4, couldn?t connect the Enercell with the iPhone 4 while in any of the cases. So if you need to charge your iPhone 4 with the Enercell battery pack, you must strip the phone naked to make the connection.
The Enercell Portable Power Bank battery pack works with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and the original iPhone; iPod touch (1st-3rd generations), iPod classic, iPod nano (3rd-5th generations).
With everything built-in, including the hideaway USB charger and a 30-pin connector, the Enercell is extremely portable and can fit in a small gear bag. It provides an additional 6 hours of run time on average for your iDevice and works with most iPhone and iPod models. It?s fast to charge and it certainly comes in handy when you need some extra power to make to the end of a trip. The only thing that prevents it from being an ideal portable battery pack is the 30-pin falls a bit short which requires you to take your iPhone 4 out of the case to charge. When you are on the run, the last thing you?d want to do is leaving your slippery device out of its case.
