iPad 2 Case Review: OtterBox Utility Series Latch for iPad and iPad 2

What's Hot: If you regularly use your iPad in non-standard environments, you need this product. Provides a secure way to hold your iPad with one hand, and to attach it to almost any object. Will work with iPads in or out of cases.

What's Not: If you only use your iPad in controlled environments, you do not need this product.

The OtterBox Utility Latch is a universal iPad retention system that allows you to securely grip your iPad with one hand so you can work with the other. It also allows you to attach your device to another object such as your leg, a fencepost, or the headrest of a car. It works with the original iPad and the iPad 2, whether or not you are using a case.

Size and Fit

The Utility Latch grabs your iPad and holds it tight through a series of adjustable straps that wrap around all four of its corners. Because of this design, it will work whether or not you are using a case. It also comes with an elastic screen cover, which is a nice touch.

Features and Quality

The latch comes with a number of versatile accessories. First, is the handgrip, which allows you to hold your device securely with one hand while working with the other. Second, is the elastic strap, which allows you to secure your iPad to your leg (for working in the sitting position without a desk) or the headrest of a car, etc. The third method of retention is a combination lanyard/S-clip that allows you to hang your iPad or iPad 2 in either the vertical or horizontal orientation; The S-clip also allows you to attach your iPad to your belt or bag in case you need both hands free. The last accessory included with the Latch is the shower cap. Ok, it?s not really a shower cap, but it looks like one, and it is designed to fit nicely over the screen of your iPad to protect it from dust and scratches. It installs/uninstalls in seconds and takes up almost no space.

All of these accessories work quite well, and are ingeniously designed for compact storage and interconnectedness (is that a word?). The thing about the Latch, though, is: If you need it, you REALLY need it, because there?s nothing else on the market like it. However, if you keep your iPad in a portfolio-style case and it never gets used outside, you?re likely to wonder why you bought it.

Style

The Latch comes in traditional OtterBox style; Black with yellow accents, and a tasteful logo. While it is not pretty, it says to the world: I am here with my iPad and my rugged OtterBox accoutrements, and I am ready for anything.

Summary

The OtterBox Utility Series Latch is a great product for those who need it. If you use your iPad in a rugged environment or are prone to clumsiness, then this is for you. When used correctly, it will help you keep a grip on your precious and fragile iPad or iPad 2, and will allow you to look a bit like Batman while doing it.
