IDC, one of the companies that do quarterly metrics on smartphone sales, took a look at Q1 2011 sales by manufacturer (not OS or platform) and declared what many of us guessed. Worldwide, even Nokia's sales are growing since smartphones are taking off with a 79.7 percent growth rate year over year. But they went from 38.8 percent of the worldwide market down to 24.3 percent. That still puts them in the number 1 position worldwide, and 6 million phones ahead of Apple for the quarter.
Apple is at number 2 with 18.7 percent marketshare, RIM is third with 14 percent and Samsung has 10.8 percent. HTC finishes 5th (remarkable for a small company) at 8.9 percent. HTC's shipments grew 229.6 percent over the year period, and Samsung grew 350 percent according to IDC!
