iPhone 4 Case Review: Seidio Innocase Active X Case for iPhone 4

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4

What's Hot: Very clever design, good protection with 2 layers, easy to use.

What's Not: Doesn't come with a screen protector.

For iPhone 4 users who are looking for a case that's semi-rugged but also slim, the Seidio Innocase Active X for iPhone 4 is a good answer. The case strikes a balance between providing good protection for your iPhone 4 yet keeping its figure slim. This two-layer case fits the iPhone 4 perfectly and it's very easy to put it on and take it off of the phone. The case has perfect cutouts for ports and buttons, and since it?s form fitting and custom cut, the AT&T and International iPhone 4 case and the Verizon iPhone 4 case come separately. The hard cover on the Seidio Innocase Active X Case comes in five colors while the inner silicone case comes in only black.

Design

The Seidio Innocase Active X Case for iPhone 4 comes with two-layers of protection in a very clever design. The interior layer is made with impact absorbing polymer sleeve that fits the iPhone 4 like a glove. The surface of the silicone sleeve is textured on the back, which creates an inset for the exterior hard cover, and ribbed on the sides for a better grip to handle the phone. The exterior hard skeleton cover sits flush with the rest of the soft cover thanks to the inset, adding major protection for the structure and more rigidity without adding any bulk to the case. Very clever! The hard cover wraps most of the back of the iPhone 4, the four corners and two sides (just the clips on the sides). The ?claws? of the hard cover fit perfectly into the grooves made for them in the silicone layer.

The silicone sleeve layer in the Seidio Innocase Active X Case is smooth, and the hard plastic cover also has a specially made soft coating that feels very nice in hand. The hard cover is also quite flexible, and it?s very easy to put it onto the silicone case or take it off. The hard cover also adds a touch of style as it comes in a nice selection of colors: Black, Sapphire Blue, Burgundy, Amethyst and Pearl White. If you need a belt or purse holster for this case, Seidio also sells one that?s sturdy but not too heavy or bulky.

Features

A two-layer design makes a lot of sense in this case: the silicone layer gives the iPhone 4 a soft surface and the hard cover gives the case a structural integrity and keeps the silicone case in shape. The Seidio Innocase Active X Case for iPhone 4 has perfect cutouts for the AT&T and International version through both layers of protection. The cutouts for the rear camera and flash are dead center, and since the case does have some thickness, the camera lens will not touch any surface when you put the phone down on a table. The audio jack and the mic on top also have perfectly centered cutout, and you should have no trouble using any 3.5mm headset or earbuds. The bottom cutout leaves the 30-pin connector and two grill holes open, but again since the case has some thickness, your iPhone 4 might not fit all docks or audio systems that have tight connector areas. The cutout for the silence button on the AT&T iPhone 4 looks perfectly centered, but it looks like Seidio modified the case for the Verizon iPhone 4 by cutting the hole bigger. The volume buttons and power buttons are under silicone cover, the volume buttons are easier to press than the power button under the cover. You will need to press it a bit harder on the power button, but for those who accidently press the iPhone 4 power button, this might be a blessing.

When you put on both layers, the Seidio Innocase Active X Case for iPhone 4 feels sturdy and well fit. The ribbed grooves on the sides not only fit the hard cover but also fit your fingers when you hold the iPhone 4. The case wraps around the front of the iPhone 4, creating a nice ridge for the screen to rest on when you put the phone face down on a table, and also gives your ear a soft surface when you put the earpiece next to your ear.

Conclusion

The Seidio Innocase Active X Case for iPhone 4 is a surprisingly well-built case. It has a very nice design that gives the phone great protection without adding too much bulk. Users who think OtterBox Defender for iPhone 4 is an overkill but a simple silicone case just doesn?t cut it, the Seidio Innocase Active X Case is a really good choice. Be aware that the Seidio Innocase Active X Case doesn?t come with any screen protector. Since the case comes in different versions for the AT&T and the Verizon iPhone 4, make sure you pick the right one when you get it.
