iPhone 4 Case Review: Ivyskin Quattro 4 for iPhone 4 (ATT and Verizon) Reviewed by Tom Slayton
Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4.5
What's Hot: Provides excellent shock/drop protection without adding a great deal of bulk. Available in a variety of colors, with interchangeable home button covers. Glass screen cover provides much better screen protection than the industry-standard plastic or vinyl cover.
What's Not: Glass cover feels tackier than the iPhone's Gorilla Glass (although, it's much better than any vinyl or plastic screen cover I?ve used), and will take some getting used to. Case is difficult to remove once installed.
The Quattro 4 iPhone 4 case from Ivyskin provides significant drop/shock protection without turning your sleek smartphone into a brick. An included screen cover made of real glass goes a long way toward silencing my complaints regarding screen covers, in general.
Size and Fit
The Quattro 4 is surprisingly slim considering the level of protection it provides. The case installs in seconds and hugs your phone like a professional wrestler. Overall, this is certainly a good thing, however at some point you will need to remove the case and you should know that sliding the pieces apart is not nearly as easy as putting them together. Be prepared to spend several minutes at this task, which you will achieve by rocking the pieces side to side as you gently pull them apart. Or get a tool that can wedge the case pieces apart.
Features and Quality
As previously stated, the Quattro 4 is a very slim case; in fact, it may be the slimmest rugged case I have ever seen. It achieves this by incorporating multiple layers (PolyCarbonate, Polysilicon, and enhanced TPE) into a single piece rather than creating discreet layers for the user to install. While you may miss the feel of the soft silicone outer layer that has become the standard in rugged cases, you will most certainly appreciate the more compact design. All of the ports and buttons are covered, providing excellent everyday protection from moisture. However, don?t expect any of this to protect your phone if submerged. A variety of accessories are available (purchased separately) such as a belt clip, credit card clip, and a battery pack.
The Ivyskin case has cutouts for the back camera, the bottom of the phone with a rubber cover for the 30-pin connect and side buttons for either the AT&T version or the Verizon version. It has a cutout of the audio jack also protected by a cover, and the power button, the volume buttons and the Home button are all under cover. While most cutouts make the case more functional, the Home button is way too sensitive and often turns on the screen by accident while it?s in your pocket.
The Quattro 4 case comes in a variety of colors. The one I reviewed was a sort of iridescent purple seemed to shift colors slightly depending on the light. While purple isn?t my first choice for cell phone cases, it was undeniably cool looking. Lastly, Ivyskin provides you with a number of different colored home buttons to customize your case further.
The Ivyskin Quattro 4 is an excellent iPhone case that successfully walks a very thin line between form and function. If you prefer your rugged cases to look rugged, look elsewhere. However, if you want protection without adding a great deal of bulk, or if you are looking for a contemporary look rather than a military one, this is the case for you. The addition of a glass screen cover will be good news indeed for those of us who are tired of scratched and scuffed vinyl or plastic ones.
