HTC Status Video Review
      #40999 - 07/18/11 04:43 PM

The HTC Status is a low priced Android messaging phone on ATT. It's the US counterpart to the HTC Cha Cha, and it proves inexpensive doesn't mean junk. We really like the design and materials-- it looks modern, unique and feels solid. The $49 with contract phone has a very usable QWERTY keyboard with relatively large, domed keys. It targets social media and messaging folks, and features HTC's own widgets and software that work with Facebook, Twitter, email and SMS.

This is the closest you'll get to the mythical Facebook phone at the moment, and the phone has a dedicated Facebook button just below the keyboard. It's context aware, so in the home screen you'll see the status update field and in the camera app, it's ready to upload a photo.

Under the hood we have an 800MHz Qualcomm CPU that's not going to win any speed awards. The phone is decently responsive, but it has to work harder to get AT&T Live TV (MobiTV) running, and there's no Adobe Flash Player plugin. Multimedia lovers, this isn't your phone. The 2.6", 480 x 320 display is likewise not ideal for lots of movie or TV watching. But the phone's designed for pocketability and messaging. HTC has the Inspire 4G on AT&T for those of you who want to live life in the big and fast lane.

The phone runs Android OS 2.3 Gingerbread, the latest and greatest Android phone OS, and it has HTC Sense 2.1 for Messenger phones. We're not sure why HTC has the confusing version number thing going, but HTC Sense 2.1 for Messenger phones and HTC Sense 2.1 for tablets = HTC Sense 3.0 in terms of features.

The smartphone has the usual GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth, as well as a 5MP rear camera and front VGA camera. The Status ships with both Google Maps and AT&T Navigator. It's available starting today.
