iPhone Case Review: iPik.case for iPhone 4 by mini-mal

What's Hot: Easy to use, slim and light, the kickstand works very well.

What's Not: The 30-pin connect is deeper than in other cases.

Among a large number of iPhone 4 cases we've seen, very few actually had a built-in stand for viewing movies or taking long videos. iPik.case for iPhone 4 by mini-mal not only provides an adjustable stand for the phone, but also comes in a very slim form. The iPik.case is a plastic form fitting case for the iPhone 4 and comes in three options: white, black and clear.

Design

The iPik.case for the iPhone 4 is made with thin plastic with ABS support. It's reasonably sturdy yet quite flexible. The case can prevent scratches and pokes from small objects like pens or keys in your bag, and it provides some structural supports as well. The case measures 4.9 x 2.5 x 0.5 inches and is very light. The case comes in two parts and snaps on together to cover the iPhone 4. The material is flexible enough so that it?s easy to put the case and take it off. Though the plastic is quite thin, it doesn?t feel too fragile or easily breakable as it?s re-enforced.

The iPik.case for iPhone 4 comes in three color options, and each option gives the case a different look. The coated plastic case is very scratch resistant, and though the surface is smooth, it?s not very slippery. The interior surface is the same as the exterior surface and has no soft lining for the back of the iPhone 4. The case wraps around the front and covers the edges of the iPhone 4 on the front, and it will touch the surface instead of the phone?s screen if you put the iPhone 4 face down on a table.

Features

The iPik.case has cutouts for all ports and buttons on the iPhone 4, and these cutouts offer generous space for you to operate the buttons. The most unique feature on the iPik.case is the built-in kickstand which is hidden just below the 30-pin connector on the bottom. Since the case has to accommodate the kickstand, the 30-pin connector is sitting deeper in the case than in most other cases. Using the Apple charging/syncing cable included with the iPhone 4, we had no trouble accessing the connector while in this case. But if you have accessories that have connectors with push-in locks, you might have to fiddle with the connector a bit to reach inside of the cutout to connect.

More than a few times, we wished we had a stand for our iPhone 4 when watching movies or making long Facetime video calls. The iPik.case does the trick perfectly. The kickstand has a small leg and teeth-like gear that can position the iPhone 4 in 15 positions. The iPhone 4 can stand in best viewing angles for multimedia viewing, on-screen keyboard typing, web surfing and shooting long videos. The stand folds into the case when not in use, and it?s reasonably steady in most positions.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a slim case that has a built-in stand that doesn?t add much bulk as a trade-off, the iPik.case for the iPhone 4 is a good choice. It can protect the iPhone 4 from any scratches and nicks in a bag or backpack, and it?s easy to use. The case has all the necessary cutouts to be a functional case and works with either the AT&T or Version version of the iPhone 4. The kickstand is a unique design that works very nicely in propping up the iPhone 4 in most useful positions. Since the kickstand hides below the bottom of the iPhone 4, the 30-pin connect is inset more into the case than with other cases. This means you are likely not able to use most audio systems or docking stations with normal connector while the phone is in the iPik.case.
