iPhone Battery Case Review: iPowerUp PwrVault Battery Case for iPhone 4S

What's Hot: Slick, hard plastic construction. Available in white. Adds almost no width to your iPhone. Battery level indicator.

What's Not: 1700 mAh battery capacity is lower than some competing products but isn't noticeably lighter.

Overview

iPowerUp makes smartphone battery cases with advanced technology that combines solar, AC/DC/USB & universal charging capabilities in an all-in-one package design in order to extend the battery life by up to 6 hours, depending on the phone and features being used. Their products include the PwrVault case for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 (non-solar), as well as the PwrVault Hybrid case which accommodates the entire Blackberry Curve family of phones and several new Droid models. We look at the PwrVault battery case for iPhone 4S for this review. The iPowerUp PwrVault battery case for iPhone 4/4S is another solid entrant into the increasingly crowded battery case market.

Size and Fit

Slide your iPhone into the PwrVault and youíre off and running in seconds. The top portion of the case locks into place with a satisfying click and is very sturdy compared to some cases Iíve seen. From the front, it adds very little size to your phone except at the bottom where the connector is. The battery is on the back of the case so thatís where youíre going to see the extra bulk. Itís hidden well, however, and the bevel on the back portion really makes the case feel smaller in your hands than it actually is. As with all battery cases, itís pretty heavy, but if you need the extra power, itís a reasonable trade-off.

Features and Quality

The PwrVault sports a 1700mAh battery. While this is smaller than some other battery cases, it is enough to more than double the talk/surf/etc time of your iPhone. I took this case with me on a travel day, and after near continuous use (except for the takeoff/landing), I wasnít able to deplete it in a single day. Of course, your mileage will vary, but my real-world experience was very positive. The case has a very solid feel to it, and its hard plastic construction means it wonít pull your pocket inside-out, or pick up lint. Charging is done via the included mini-USB cable and a power meter on the back will let you know how much juice you have left. You can sync your device directly through the charge cable, eliminating the need to remove your phone from its case.

Style
The most unique thing about this case is the fact that itís available in white. While this is not a big deal to some, it is a VERY big deal to others. Additionally, the back of the case is nicely beveled, giving it a sleek appearance.

Summary

The PwrVault is a solid battery case for the iPhone 4/4S. Not only does it more than double the capacity of your iPhoneís internal battery, but it does so with a minimum of bulk, and a healthy dash of style (especially for owners of a white iPhone).
