iPhone Case Review: The Joy Factory BubbleShield for Smartphones
Reviewed by Tom Slayton

What's Hot: Provides protection from water jets (splashing, rain, etc). Inexpensive. Theoretically reusable. Phone/tablet is fully functional within the sleeve (including cameras). Comes in multipacks.

What's Not: Does not provide protection from water immersion. Not designed for long-term use. Flimsy, disposable feel.

Overview

The BubbleShield is a limited-use smartphone sleeve that is designed to protect your device from damage from splashing water, mud, sand, grit, etc.

Size and Fit

The BubbleShield for smartphones will accommodate electronic devices up to 5.11 x 2.75 x 0.39 inches, and the tablet version will support devices up to 9.44 x 7.48 x 0.39 inches. This product is designed specifically for short-term use and fits like a reinforced ziplock baggie. This is not a case; itís a sleeve, and is not designed for everyday use.

Features and Quality

The BubbleShield is not a feature-rich product. In fact, it is designed for one thing, and one thing only: to protect your device from water/sand/mud/dust exposure. The sleeve is very thin but the edges are reinforced, making it surprisingly durable, and the double ziplock seal does a good job of keeping light water exposure from ruining your day. My only complaint about this product (and itís a big one) is the fact that you are forced to buy multiple disposable sleeves rather than a single reusable one. This product is marketed and packaged in a manner that suggests that BubbleShields arenít designed to last. How does one know when it is time to toss the old one aside and grab a new one? Do we wait until it starts to leak or do we just wait until it looks like it might leak sometime in the near future? Only time will tell if the multipack is for those who use multiple devices and need protection from water and elements; or you will need to dispose one often.

Style

The BubbleShield actually wins some style points in spite of its impermanent nature. The reinforced edges have a nice orange hue and their logo is smartly embossed on one side of the sleeve. Lastly, a reinforced ring makes it possible to attach it to your keys/backpack/carabiner; certainly a nice touch.

Summary
If youíre planning a vacation to a beach resort or tropical rainforest, and have a sizeable collection of electronic devices you want to protect from the elements, this may be exactly what you need. However, if you need regular, daily protection for your device, stick with something more long-term and useable.
