Speck has launched a couple of new cases for the Samsung Galaxy Note. Their Fitted case has a professional look yet very stylish. The CandyShell case for the Samsung Galaxy Note however takes another approach with two layers of protection built into a one-piece flexible case. It's easier to use than the two-piece Fitted case and it provides good protection for the large Galaxy Note. The Speck CandyShell case comes in two-tone design and currently in two color combos: black/gray and white/pink.
As with the Speck Fitted case, the CandyShell case for the Galaxy Note covers the entire back and all sides of the phone/tablet. The case has two layers of protection: the exterior is a hard shell with treated plastic that can protect the phone from scratches, bumps and pokes; and the interior is a soft rubberized material that won't scratch your phone when you put it in the case or take it out, and helps absorb some shock to the structure of the large device. Both the Fitted case and the CandyShell case fit the phone perfect, but the difference between them is that the Fitted case is more rigid and comes in two pieces for installation and disassembly while the CandyShell case has enough flexibility that you can put your phone in and take it out of the case with a reasonable ease.
As with the Fitted case, the CandyShell for the Galaxy Note has solid protection for the back of the phone and it wraps around the sides and covers the edges of the front bezel. You can safely put the phone face down without worrying the screen touching the surface since the case will hold the display off. While the form is similar to the Fitted case, the glossy material on the exterior of the CandyShell feels slippery. The two-tone design looks attractive, and the interior color spills out of edges to break the large mono color back.
The Speck CandyShell Case for Galaxy Note is a very functional case. It has cutouts for all ports and buttons on the phone/tablet. Unlike the CandyShell case for the iPhone 4S, the Galaxy Note case's camera/flash cutout isn't overly large but fits the cluster perfectly. The case has a generous cutout for the stylus silo that doesn't get in your way of taking the stylus out or putting it back in. The case has cutouts for the rear speaker, the sync/charge port, the mics and the 3.5mm audio jack. The side buttons (power and volume buttons) live under the rubberized interior cover, and they are also very easy to use.
As with the Fitted case, the sync/charge port cutout is big enough to work with some docks and audio accessories, but the case adds some thickness. So be sure to check out the height of the docking connector if you want to use the phone/tablet in the case. The CandyShell case for the Galaxy Note adds 1.4 ounces to the phone's weight.
If you are looking for a more playful and colorful case than the Fitted design, the two-tone CandyShell for Galaxy Note, especially in white and pink, fits the bill. The case is sturdy and protective, yet light and easy to use. The case gives you access to everything on the phone, and it adds very little weight. We only wish that the case had rubberized material on the back as the large shiny plastic surface feels slippery.
