The iSkin fuze and fuze SE cases for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 combine a tough outer shell with soft inner layer to provide good protection for your phone. The fuze SE adds some extra protection for the front display bezel while the fuze case leaves most of the bezel exposed. The iSkin fuze SE is an easy to use case that's also quite slim and light. This Special Edition case comes in a carbon color scheme with brushed-metal finish decorating the front.

Design

The iSkin fuze SE comes in two pieces. The back piece is the same used in the non-special edition of fuze cases with a polycarbonate hard shell coated with shock absorbing thermo-polymer inner layer. You can easily seat your iPhone 4S in the back piece, and clip the front piece to the back. The front piece on the SE version is a bit different: it covers the front bezel with a cutout for the earpiece and front camera. The front piece is also made with hard plastic shell with soft coating layer on the inside. On the exterior, it has a brushed-metal finish that gives this understated case a splash of character.

The case is easy to install and very easy to take apart. Use your fingernail to pry open the small claps around the case to take apart the two pieces of the case. As the iSkin fuze SE is designed to be a semi-rugged case, it comes with a rubber cover for the 30-pin connector with the case, and extra ones in case you lose it or wear it out. The connector cover has its own adhesive to attach to the back piece of the case. While the fuze SE has several layers of protection, the case is actually surprisingly slim and light.

Features

The iSkin fuze SE is a very functional case even with all buttons protected under the cover. The fuze SE covers the power button, volume controls and even the Home button on the front, but provides rigid raised buttons with soft touch surface to make it easier to operate the iPhone 4S/4's buttons hidden behind. The case has cutouts for the audio jack and mic on the top of the phone, the silence slider, the bottom mic and speaker as well as the front earpiece and camera. The case also offers a generous cutout on the back to expose the rear camera and flash and offers enough space for the flash to fully illuminate.

The bottom 30-pin connector cover is actually attached directly to the outer plastic piece. It's easy to use the port if you are using an USB cable, but if you are using docking stations or audio speakers/alarm clocks, you will likely need to pull back the 30-pin connector cover in order to connect. You can pull the connector cover back completely to get out the way, but it will wear out the piece with use. Thankfully the case comes with two extra ones you can replace the built-in on your own easily.

Conclusion

The iSkin fuze SE is an effective case that can protect your entire iPhone 4S except the screen. The case is slim with a semi-rugged look. The soft coating feels nice in hand, and the inner soft layer protects the phone from scratches and some shock damage. The buttons are well protected while remain very easy to use including the Home button. The case's two-piece design makes it easy to install and take off of the iPhone 4S. The case comes with a small cleaning kit but no screen protector included. The SE version is also more expensive.
