Portable Speaker Review: iLuv MobiDock iMM375 Stereo Speaker Dock Review

Editor's Rating (1-5): 4

What's Hot: Charges your phone while playing audio, works with either portrait or landscape orientation, good volume and good quality audio.

What's Not: Hard to work with anything that doesn't have a micro USB port.

The iLuv MobiDock iMM375 is a portable stereo speaker dock that works with smartphones or any mobile device that has a micro USB port. The speaker dock charges the device via USB while playing audio via the 3.5mm cable hidden on top of the speakers. The small speaker dock sounds very loud and audio is quite good for its size. The speaker dock has a unique phone stand that can hold your smartphone in either portrait of landscape orientation. iLuv offers this speaker dock in two different models: the iMM375 used in this review streams audio via the built-in 3.5mm audio cable, while the iMM377 uses Bluetooth wireless streaming.

Design

The iLuv MobiDock iMM375 has a box style speaker design with two front firing speakers behind a black fabric mesh cover. The speaker dock is quite small and portable, measuring 9.84 x 4.72 x 1.96 inches. On the iMM375 model, there is a small compartment on top of the speaker dock with a flip open door. The 3.5mm audio cable hides inside of the compartment. The cable is long enough to use with any device you dock into the micro USB port. Four small hardware buttons live on top of the speaker dock including power, volume controls and play/pause buttons. The speaker dock comes with a 100-240V world AC charger that connects to the dock on the back.

The biggest star on the iMM375 is the robust stand for holding up your device while playing audio. iLuv in fact has registered it as their own and named it myBot robotic arms. The stand is thick, not only provides a strong stand for the smartphone, but also holds it off the dock, creating enough space for the sound to come through in case you are using the phone in landscape mode. The micro USB connector has rotation function, and allows connection with devices with the connector facing either direction. The base where the micro USB is sitting on slides on the bottom rail to match the position of the micro USB port on your phone. Check out our photo of the HTC One X with a side micro USB port docking on the iMM375 below. The myBot smartphone holder has two thick arms that can open up like wings. They're stiff so that you can position the arms anywhere to fit the size of your smartphone, and when you are done with the arms, just fold them back into the stand.

Audio Quality

Audio through the 3.5mm port sounded clear and loud from most phones we tested. The amplifiers feel powerful and the two 2" dynamic acoustic speakers sound balanced. Most smartphones and ebook readers sounded clear and full enough in our tests including the Nokia Lumia 900, Kindle Fire and Motorola Droid Razr Maxx; and phones with Beats audio such as the HTC One X sounded better with fuller sound and more powerful bass. While the dynamic range doesn't compete with larger systems such as the iLuv's ArtStation Pro for Android tablet, the iMM375 MobiDock has good sound for its size.

Volume is loud on this small sized speaker. You can certain fill a room with it, and thanks to the well tuning of the amp and the speakers, it doesn't sounds tinny or buzzing even when you turn the volume to very high. You can control the volume via either the speaker dock's volume buttons or using your phone's volume control. There isn't a remote control included with the iMM375.

While you are watching movies and playing music, the dock charges your smartphone. We tested several Android and Windows smartphones with the iLuv iMM375, everything charged smoothly except the Droid Razr Maxx by Motorola. The audio plays fine but the dock doesn't charge the phone.

Conclusion

If you need a small speaker dock that you can take with your on the road, the iLuv MobiDock is a great choice for watching movies, playing music and audio books. It's powerful enough to fill a large space with enough volume but also it has good balance and clarity of the audio. It doesn't have small speaker problems such as over driven drivers or weak amp. The design fits phones and devices with a micro USB port, but if your device doesn't have one, like the iPhone models, the speaker dock doesn't have a place to hold it. The myBot omni fit system is a unique and useful design that can hold your device in place easily, regardless the orientation or the size of the device.
