What's Hot: High capacity battery in a convenient package, very protective case, charges any smartphone and tablet.

What's Not: Adds bulk and weight. Charges tablet slowly.

We've seen quite a few external battery packs for the iPad, but none is as clever and convenient as the Padacs Enduro Power Pack Case for iPad 2 and the new iPad. This battery case packs a whopping 6800mAh power while providing excellent protection as well as a very functional stand for the tablet. It works with other devices too, smartphones, tablets and mobile devices with USB charging capabilities. If you need some serious power on the road for charging your iPad and smartphone, the Enduro Power Pack Case is hard to beat.

The Padacs Enduro Power Pack Case has a unique design and is built like a tank. The large built-in battery comes in a thin slate form that molds into the front cover of the portfolio style case. The case has a sturdy tablet holder made with strong yet flexible TPU material. The holder clamps the iPad with four corner braces and it's very easy to put your iPad in or take it out. The corners have some thickness and strong enough to hold the battery pack cover that's heavier than the usual display cover on a regular case.

The interior of the Enduro is soft, rubber-like PU leather. It's grippy and feels soft so that it will not mark your iPad's surface. The grippy interior also helps the built-in stand work very easily. The Enduro Power pack shuts with a large closure tab with magnetic closure, and the case offers auto sleeping and waking the screen feature. The case adds some bulk as the built-in battery is large and the case has to be strong enough to hold both the battery pack and the tablet together. It weights 1.4 lbs.

As a case, the Enduro iPad Power Pack is very functional. Since the tablet holder only blocks the four corners of the iPad, you have access to all buttons and ports on the iPad 2 or the new iPad 3rd gen. The holder fits both models equally well. The case does have a cutout for the rear camera. The Padacs Enduro Power Pack Case comes with a short micro USB to USB adapter and you can use your iPad/iPhone 30-pin connector cable to work with it or any smartphone and tablet via USB cable. We tested the battery pack with several iPad and iPhone models, as well as Android smartphones and tablets, it worked with every device including the devices didn't get along with other chargers such as the Sony Xperia ion and the Droid RAZR MAXX.

The Enduro Power Pack Case also has a built-in stand that works very well. The tablet holder has a hardback that separates from the back cover half way, and you can swing the tablet in the holder to stand on the front cover/battery pack. The rubbery interior is excellent at holding the stand up in any angle you position it in.

Battery Power

The Enduro iPad Power Pack Case had a large 6800mAh Li-Ion battery that outputs 5.2V/2.0A power. You can using the included charging cable to charge the battery and the micro USB to USB cable to chare your iPad or other devices. It takes about 4 hours to charge the battery pack from empty to full power via a desktop computer using the included USB charging cable. The battery pack has a power on button and you will need to press it to start the charging process. It doesn't have a power off button, but the battery pack shuts off automatically if it's not charging anything.

The Enduro iPad Power Pack Case can add 75% additional battery runtime to the iPad 2 and 50% more to the new iPad 3rd gen. But it charges slowly. The claimed charging time for the iPad is 6-7 hours, but in our tests, it took us about 8 hours to dump all its power to the new iPad 3rd gen. And that's one of the reasons we appreciate the fact that the Enduro iPad Power Pack comes with a case that can hold your iPad while charging it - you can still use your iPad normally while it's charging. The four LED lights come in handy while the case is charging the new iPad. They stay lit to give you charging level status. When all four blue LED flash together, it means the battery pack is out of juice.

While the Padacs Enduro Power Pack takes long time to charge the iPad and other tablets, it charges smartphones quickly. It can charge the iPhone 4 from nearly empty to full in about 2 hours.

It makes a lot of sense to built a slab battery into a case that you can keep both the battery and the device together and the iPad usable while being charged. The Padacs Enduro Power Pack Case is very protective of the iPad 2 or the new iPad while provides 50% to 75% additional battery power depending which iPad you are using. The case makes it easy to use the tablet thanks for the free access to all ports and buttons, and the stand works perfectly to give you many viewing angles. The battery case does add bulk and weight thanks to the large capacity Lithium Ion slab. It charges smartphones quickly but tablets slowly, and it takes about 4 hours to fully charge via USB.
