which laptop
      #43073 - 08/01/12 05:25 AM

Im in the market for a new laptop i have a few in mind but i want to get the opinions of you guys.

*DEDICATED GRAPHICS ( I NEED TO BE ABLE TO EDIT MY HD YOUTUBE VIDEOS AND PLAY A FEW GAMES LIKE DIABLO 3)
*DECENT KEYBORED ( TO TYPE SCHOOL WORK AND POST FOR MY TECH BLOG)
*I WOULD LIKE A ULTRA BOOK OR SOMETHING REALLY PORTABLE
*I DONT CARE IF IT HAS A DISK DRIVE I CANT EVEN REMEMBER THE LAST DISK I BOUGHT
*I AM FINE WITH A 13 INCH SCREEN I WILL MOST LIKELY GET A EXTERNAL MONITOR
*I REALLY WANT A SSD

I no i cant have my cake and eat it to. But im sure there has to be somthing that meets those. These are what i have seen
zenbook ux32
vaio z (with dock)
vaio s
acer timeline m3

Which one would you suggest im leaning towards the zenbook. But i really want a ssd. The m3 looks great for the price but the screen seems terrible. The vaio s seems good but it is a little bigger an d lacks the ssd.

what would be your suggestion

For video editing, I'd lean toward the Vaio S 13.3 since it has a full mobile CPU. The Vaio Z can do the job wonderfully, if you can live with the price. The UX32VD runs on a ULV CPU and that does mean slower video processing, and the GT620M isn't the sharpest graphics card. If you watch our gaming video posted in the news section, you'll see that more demanding games need to be run a lower than native resolution with effects set to low. The Vaio S 13.3 with the NVidia GT640M LE plays games at 1080p like a champ.

So to sum it up

If you want a Light Weight Performer go for zenbook(consider its ULV CPU as its impuissance)

And Acer timeline m3 too has the Nvidia GT640M but you have to bear with the screen quality.

Vaio S 13.3 is a great laptop you have to compromise on the weight a little its 3.5-4lbs
approximately without the extra clip-on(clamp-on? whatever) style battery and you will add a pound to it if you need to go on for a 14 hour wireless freedom that is with the clip-on battery.

Vaio Z - Now this is one thing in your list which might enable you to have your cake and eat it with a little sour taste of price.

I was also thinking about a macbook pro. I was looking at a referb 2011 15 mbp. Its the quad i7 with the 6750m but only has 512 mb. How would this compare tot he others. This would cost me between 1200 and 1400

If you're going to run Windows to play games, the 512 megs of VRAM is limiting in terms of supported resolutions (I have one and say this from experience). Otherwise, it's a lovely machine.

I wouldnt buy it to run windows. How would the 512mb work with video editing in adobe premier. And would it be good on diablo 3. I would just play it on mac and not dual boot it

i know i have a pending question but i have a few more.

on the 13 vaio s is the 1366x768 that much worse that the 1600x900 its 100 more and comes with less ram?

I figure i could put that extra towards a ssd

also what do you think about the upgrade to 2 gb of vram is it worth it?

The resolution difference really depends on how much you need to see on screen. Higher res certainly is handy for apps that use floating palettes or when looking at photos. I wouldn't spend for the upgrade to 2 gigs of VRAM.

so for me its between the vaio s and a refurb 2011 mbp. I have never used a mac and would like give it a shot. But i know i would have to lower the settings on some games.Since most of them would have to run on boot camp since i will use steam. But on the other hand i think i would gain alot more in processing power with the quad i7 which would benefit the productive part of my usage.

Yes, the quad core i7 is a big selling point, though the MBP is noticeably heavier than the Vaio S 13.3 if you plan to lug it around frequently.

I googled this but most of it is just hate and fanboy crazy folks. How well does the 512mb in the macbook pro work with video editing and steam games. I will play all playable games on the mac side but i know most will have to be played on bootcamp. Will i see a big drop in gaming and overall performance compared to the vaio s

If you want to play at higher resolutions, 512 megs of VRAM is limiting. It's fine for 1366 x 768 but with higher resolutions and today's demanding 3D games, 1 gig of VRAM is desirable.
