iPhone 5 Pre-Order Starts Sept. 14, Arrives Sept. 21
      #43325 - 09/12/12 01:43 PM

Yes, the smartphone is finally out of the bag. CEO Tim Cook and company announced Apple's latest iPhone, thankfully and logically called the iPhone 5. It features a 4" Retina display running at 1136 x 640 resolution. Yes, that's a bit taller in terms of pixels than the iPhone 4S, but falls behind today's Android 1280 x 720 smartphones. Pixel density remains impressive at 326ppi.

The iPhone 5 has LTE 4G (yes!) along with dual band WiFi. Sprint, Verizon and AT&T will offer the phone in the US. Pricing is the same as ever, with the 16 gig costing $199, 32 gig for $299 and 64 gig for $399 (2 year contract prices). Pre-orders begin on Sept. 14th, and the phone can be in your hands on Sept. 21 if you're in the US, Canada, Hong Kong and a handful of other countries.

The iPhone 5 is available with a white front and brushed aluminum back and black with an anodized aluminum back.

According to Apple, the iPhone 5 display has 44% better color than the iPhone 4S and it displays the full SRGB color spectrum (not to be confused with full RGB, SRGB is a subset of RGB).

The smartphone has a single chip LTE radio with a dynamic antenna that automatically switches connections. Single chip LTE radios are used on the most recent smartphone models, and they offer better battery life and more reliable 3G to 4G network switching.

The new A6 CPU powers the iPhone 5, and Apple claims it's 2x faster than the A5.

The iPhone 5 ships with iOS 6, and that OS will be available for download on Sept. 19. It's compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, New iPad and 4th gen iPod Touch.

Rear camera resolution remains 8MP but Apple has upgraded it with a sapphire lens cover (harder and more scratch resistant than glass). It offers 40% faster shooting times vs. the iPhone 4S.

The font 720p camera with BSI sensor and face detection should make for seriously improved FaceTime video chats. Of course you'll get FaceTime over 3G if your carrier allows.
