We've reviewed the DomeSkin Energy Red Blue for the iPhone 4/4S. Now DomeSkin offers dozens of designs for the iPhone 5. Unlike most thin vinyl skins, the DomeSkin use much thicker material that protects the device from not only scratches but bumps as well since the thicker skin actions like a cushion. The skin covers the entire back of the iPhone 5 as well as above and below the display in the front. But it doesn't cover the sides of the phone. In addition to the skins, DomeSkin also offers matching wallpaper so that your iPhone look more convincing in the illusion the design of the skin tries to create. We use the Monster iPhone 5 Skin for this review.
As with the iPhone 4/4S skins, the DomeSkin for iPhone 5's armor/resin material makes the skin a lot thicker than regular vinyl skins and although it looks shiny the skin is actually quite grippy. The skin uses the same 3M non-residue adhesive technology that makes it easy to install the skin and leaves no residue after you take it off from your phone. Since the DomeSkin is a lot thicker than the regular vinyl, you can reuse the skin more times as well.
DomeSkin currently offers dozens of designs ranging from artistic to flags to sport themes and more. The make the graphics of these designs more believable, DomeSkin offers free wallpapers that you can use on your display and complete the picture in conjunction with the front pieces. Even the skins with solid colors get wallpapers that are in the same solid colors.
The DomeSkin iPhone 5 covers the back of the iPhone 5 with precise cutout for the camera, sensor and the flash. As long as you line the cutout perfectly with the camera and flash, the back skin won't obscure the view of the lens and will let the flash fully illuminate. The top of the front piece has a cutout for the earpiece and front camera, and it's a tight fit. It took us a few tries to line up the cut with the ports perfectly so that the skin won't cover the front camera. The bottom piece on the front has the perfect cutout for the Home button. Since the skin doesn't cover the sides of the iPhone 5 at all, all your side buttons and ports are wide open for access.
For those who like to use graphics to express themselves, skins are often the most colorful and direct way to show it. DomeSkin not only offers over 60 very colorful designs but also more protection thanks to the thicker skin. The surface of the skin also feels grippy and looks shiny. The stronger material also means you can reuse the skin a lot more times than the vinyl ones. The DomeSkin Monsters for iPhone 5 doesn't cover the sides of the phone however and you will need to get you own film protector for the screen.
