The id America SmartFold Leatherette Portfolio case for the iPad is a slim faux leather case that protects the entire iPad. It fits the iPad with Retina Display, iPad 3 and iPad 2 and comes in black and white color options. The id America SmartFoold is easy to use and comes with useful features such as a built-in stand and auto wake and sleep.
The id America SmartFold Leatherette Portfolio is made with good quality synthetic leatherette that looks like real leather and is odorless. As the name indicates, the case is in portfolio style with a tablet pocket on the right and a SmartCover like front cover that folds into a stand. The case has soft felt-like interior lining in light grey, and it not only feels nice and soft in hand but also protect the screen and the back of the tablet from scratches or marks when you handle it with the case. The case has stiff inserts in both the back of the case and the front cover in all four folding pieces. The back of the case has an extra layer of soft padding outside the stiff insert for added bump and shock protection. The case has strong stitching that comes in matching color with the case.
The id America SmartFold Leatherette Portfolio comes in two color options: pure black and pure white. The white version (photoed here) isn't pure white actually. It's more cream white which is much more interesting and softer white. The case can certainly protect the iPad from scratches, nicks, bumps and even some shock damage, and it has a tight fit when it's new. The id America SmartFold doesn't look too bulky and it weighs 8.4 ounces.
The id America SmartFold Leatherette Portfolio for iPad has a front cover that looks and works like the Apple SmartCover. You can roll up the cover into a stand that can position your iPad into either media viewing position or typing with on-screen keyboard position. The stand is reasonably steady if you haven't tried the SmartCover, and it's easy to position. As with the SmartCover, the id America SmartFold cover has magnetic auto wake and sleep feature built-in so that it wakes up the iPad when you open the cover and puts the screen to sleep when you close it.
The id America SmartFold Leatherette Portfolio has all the necessary cutouts for you to use the iPad in the case. The top cutouts leave out the Power button, the top mic and the audio jack. The side cutout generously exposes the screen lock button and the volume rocker. The case has a generous cut at the bottom to give you access to the sync/charge port and on the rear, the case has a cutout for the camera and sound holes for the speaker grill. All cutouts align nicely with the iPad 4 and iPad 3's buttons and ports and work fine with iPad 2's.
If you like the Apple SmartCover but want a case that protects the entire iPad, the id America SmartFold Leatherette Portfolio case is a good choice. The synthetic leather looks nice and lowers the price of the case compared to a real leather case, and the inserts and padding give your iPad strong protection. We like the easy access to all buttons and ports and the easy-to-use folding cover stand. The only thing that it lacks compared to the SmartCover and some other cases is that it only comes in two color options.
