Need help pulling the trigger on a solid laptop -- student
      #45582 - 11/06/13 11:30 PM

I currently use a desktop (Gateway Phenom X4)and it can do everything that I need (for the most part) to do except be portable!

If the laptop can outperform the desktop, I would be ecstatic.

Desktop specs:
AMD Phenom X4 9500(2.2GHz)
64 bit Quad-Core Processor
4 x 512KB L2 Cache
8GB DDR2
750GB SATA II
1gb dedicated graphics

Features that matter to me from 1-10
Screen resolution - 8
Keyboard - 9
Weight - 6
size - nothing larger than 15
battery life - 7
style - 7

Been following MTR for a while, Keep up the great work!

Mike

The Phenom X4 9500 was a very capable CPU in its day, but you'd be surprised how fast CPUs move. In terms of benchmarks, even Ultrabook ULV Core i5 and i7 CPUs can rival it. So it really depends on just how portable you want your laptop to be. If you just want to stay under 15" and weight isn't wildly important, there are around 30 solidly performing laptops that could outpace your desktop. Any brand preference, weight or size pref? Budget? Do you want an Ultrabook or a standard laptop?

I have really enjoyed the path Lenovo has been on. Im not super picky on the size of the machine, but a y series lenovo would be as large as i would go. As far as a budget, below 800 would be great. I should also mention that it would be replacing a tablet (tf300)

Some scenarios where would use the computer:

- type papers in the dimly lit library
- watch plenty of videos
- edit raw files on the road
- pretty extensive multitasking
