iPhone Speaker/Alarm Clock Review: iLuv TimeShaker Review

iPhone Speaker Review: iLuv TimeShaker Review

The iLuv TimeShaker is an all-in-one bedside alarm clock, speaker, FM radio, device charger and sleep machine. The small form should fit on most nightstands and the black exterior should blend in with most furniture. In addition to being a "jack of all trades" the TimeShaker has a unique trick up its sleeve: a vibrating disk that can help shake you awake when the alarm goes off.

Design

Measuring 9.2 x 5.5 x 4.9 inches, the iLuv TimeShaker is just the right size to fit on most nightstands and has enough room for a speaker driver, a Lightning docking port and several hardware controls. The speaker also has a display window on the front that shows the time, the source of the audio (i.e. the iPhone or iPod, FM radio or Aux), alarms and FM stations. The cradle with the Lightning port has plenty of space for any of the supported devices, and thanks to the swivel design on the Lightning port, you can even use a case with slim to medium thickness on your iPhone or iPod and it would still fit in the port. Very nice! The hardware control buttons live on the topside of the TimeShaker, and they include media playback controls such as track forward and backward, volume up and down, and play/pause; alarm settings and time settings. There is also a large button for snooze and dimmer control.

Other ports including power in, USB charging port, TimeShaker port and Aux port live on the back of the speaker. The iLuv TimeShaker is compatible with the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPod touch 5th gen and iPod nano 7th with Lightning connectors.

Features

The iLuv TimeShaker is designed to work closely with your iPhone or iPod touch. You can sync the time on your iDevice with the alarm clock and it'll keep the time until you sync time with it again, should you need it to be in a different time zone to match your phone's clock. The TimeShaker can keep the time as long as it's plugged in or the two AAA batteries still have power. You can set two alarms simultaneously in case you're sharing it with your spouse, and the alarms are easy to set and stop. The iLuv TimeShaker offers display brightness settings, though it doesn't seem to remember your setting after it's disconnected from power. So do remember to reset it if you experience a power outage.

The iLuv TimeShaker has a very decent built-in speaker. It's certainly loud enough for playing music and video from your iPhone or iPod, but it doesn't support voice calls or FaceTime chats. The TimeShaker has a hardware button that lets you choose the source of the audio and when you choose the iPhone or iPod as the source, the speaker follows the audio settings on your iDevice, for an example, if your phone is set to silent mode, there isn't any audio plays through the speaker either. For those who like to listen to the radio, the iLuv TimeShaker can receive FM stations and keep 10 preset stations on the speaker. For more audio input options, such as other smartphones, MP3 players or tablets, the iLuv TimeShaker offers a 3.5mm auxiliary audio input port on the back. The audio is quite good for playing music on your nightstand or soothing music to help you fall asleep, but it doesn't have the top audio quality or clarity other iLuv higher-end speakers offer.

The iLuv TimeShaker not only can charge your iPhone or iPod that's docked in its Lightning port, it can also charge an additional device via the power pass-through USB port on the back. With the TimeShaker plugged into the power, you can change any smartphone or tablet, including the iPad Air, using this rear USB charging port. It's great for those who use an iPhone and iPod at the same time, or an iPhone and an iPad for their daily tasks and entertainment. And of course the USB charging port isn't limited to only Apple devices, it works with any smartphone or tablet with USB charging option.

The most unique function the iLuv TimeShaker has to offer is the Shaker mode. The alarm clock comes with an accessary in a flat disk shape and when you connect it to the Shaker port on the back of the clock and turn on the Shaker mode, it'll vibrate when the alarm goes off. The vibration is strong enough that you can feel it through a pillow. The cord on the shaker is long enough to reach your bed even if you nightstand isn't close to it.

Conclusion

If you're looking for an alarm clock and audio companion for your iPhone or iPod, the iLuv TimeShaker offers almost everything you need. It can store two alarms and you can choose the wake-up call in many forms including buzzer, FM radio, iPhone/iPod, Shaker, Shaker and buzzer, Shake and FM radio and Shaker and iPhone/iPod. The built-in speaker is adequate for music playing to help you fall asleep and keep you sleeping, and offers an Aux-in port for using other devices as well. The Shaker is such a unique concept yet makes a lot of sense for heavy sleepers. The iLuv TimeShaker doesn't work with phone calls or FaceTime as it's designed to accompany you during the night.
