Bluetooth Speaker Review: Mpow Bluetooth 4.0 Mini Speaker (BTS02) Review
      #46024 - 02/10/14 09:37 PM

Mpow is building a portfolio of mobile accessories including portable batteries, Bluetooth headsets, Bluetooth Speakers and USB chargers. The company sells its products on Amazon to consumers as well as directly to distributors. The Mpow Bluetooth 4.0 Mini Speaker is their latest Bluetooth speaker that offers a very portable size and touch controls. The speaker has decent audio for the size and it works well with phones and tablets.

Design

The Mpow Bluetooth 4.0 Mini Speaker is small and portable, measuring 2.95 x 2.95 x 2 inches and weighs 6.6 ounces. The speaker has shiny piano black exterior with top-firing speaker under fine grille. The cube-like wireless speaker has a tear-drop shaped corner that offers touch controlled buttons including volume buttons and the call start/end/play/pause button. On the back of the speaker you'll find the power charging port and a 3.5mm audio out port. The mini speaker comes with USB charging cable and 3.5mm audio cable. The Mpow Bluetooth 4.0 Mini Speaker has a power on and off slider on the bottom and a ring of thin LED light strip in the middle to indicate Bluetooth and battery status.

Bluetooth

The Mpow Bluetooth 4.0 Mini Speaker has built-in Bluetooth v4.0 and supports both mono and stereo Bluetooth audio profiles including A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP. The speaker is very easy to pair with automatic pairing feature and voice guidance. It can pair with multiple devices, such as your smartphone and your tablet, simultaneously and it reconnects automatically after power cycling. The only time you have to re-connect the speaker with a device (not re-pair) is after you've used the AUX input instead of via Bluetooth. The speaker automatically goes into pairing mode when you turn on the power and for subsequent pairing, press and hold the Call/Play button until the LED flashes red and blue and the voice guidance prompts "pairing". We tested the Mpow Bluetooth 4.0 Mini Speaker with several phones including the iPhone 5s, the Sony Xperia Z1s and the Samsung Galaxy S4, as well as tablets such as the iPad Air, the LG G Pad and more, and found the speaker paired and connected with all easily.

Sound

The Mpow Bluetooth 4.0 Mini Speaker has frequency response range of 100Hz to 20 kHz and loud volume for a small speaker. As it has only one speaker the Mpower doesn't offer as full a body of sound or as powerful a bass, even when compared to other mono speakers such as the HMDX Jam Plus speaker, but it can certainly fill a room with loud sound without blowing it out and distorting the audio. Most music genres sounded good in our test on the Bluetooth mini speaker both via Bluetooth and the AUX-in port with reasonably clear audio and good dynamic balance. Bass had nice presence though not very full and strong. The top-firing speaker spreads the sound evenly within certain distance; too far from the speaker, both volume and characteristics of the tracks start to have degradation.

Audio through wireless Bluetooth doesn't have any delays and the touch volume and play controls work well. The Mpow Bluetooth 4.0 Mini Speaker works nicely as a conference speaker. Voice calls via the speaker are loud and clear.

Battery

The Mpow Bluetooth 4.0 Mini Speaker has built-in rechargeable battery that offers at least 6 hours of playtime and 350 hours of standby time. You can charge the speaker via included USB to micro USB cable or any USB/micro USB cable with the speaker's DC-5V charging port.

Conclusion

The Mpow Bluetooth 4.0 Mini Speaker is a good option for those who wish to carry a small speaker that doubles as speakerphone in their bags or on trips. The speaker is incredibly small and light, the audio loud and reasonably clear. It's a great voice call/conference call speakerphone, and a decent music, video and gaming speaker in a pinch. The speaker is affordable and its built-in Bluetooth is very easy to use with your smartphones and tablets.
