The Corsair Vengeance K70 is a full mechanical gaming keyboard with programmable backlighting and a built-in wrist rest. This isn't just homage to mechanical keyboards that seem to have all but disappeared from the market, but the Cherry MX mechanical key switches ensure rapid response even with multiple key presses and long lasting vigor that can withstand the abuse of the most avid gamers. The Corsair Vengeance K70 has rugged and solid build in several tunings and colors.
In the world of flash and often 'out there' gaming keyboard designs, the Corsair Vengeance K70 has an understated elegance. The keyboard has a strong build with a gunmetal gray anodized brushed aluminum chassis dressed either in black or silver. The Cherry MX key switches come in three colors: red, blue and brown. If you're picking by the color of key switches here are the available models: the Cherry MX Red comes in black anodized with brilliant red LED backlighting, or a natural silver finish with brilliant blue LEDs; the Cherry MX Brown version of the K70 has a gunmetal gray anodized brushed aluminum chassis and brilliant blue LED backlighting; and finally the Cherry MX Blue key switch version has a gunmetal gray anodized brushed aluminum chassis and brilliant blue LED backlighting. Each Cherry MX version isn't just a color code for looks but indicates differently tuned keyboards as well.
The Corsair Vengeance K70 also has a nibble body measuring 17.3 x 8.3 x 3.3 inches. The wrist rest adds to the footprint but also provides a comfortable angle and has soft touch coating. Combining the wrist rest and the four pop-up stands on the bottom of the keyboard, you can position the keyboard for comfortable typing. The Corsair Vengeance K70 has standard North America keyboard layout plus built-in media playback controls and a metal volume knob that feels nice to use. You'll also find the backlight program button, backlight level adjustment button and the Windows Lock button above the keyboard. The Corsair Vengeance K70 comes with robust combined USB keyboard and USB power pass-through cable in a Kevlar-like armor. The keyboard offers an extra USB connector on the back with power so that you can plug in a mouse or headset to the keyboard. For compatibility purposes, the Corsair Vengeance K70 offers a BIOS switch for motherboard BIOS or KVM switches that don't support a gaming keyboard. But for gaming, you'll want the BIOS slider to "1" position for fast refresh rate.
The Corsair Vengeance K70 line offers flexibility of the Cherry MX series by tuning them for different typists. The Cherry MX Red offers ultra fast double and triple taps and the Cherry MX Brown offers quieter key clicks, while the Cherry MX Blue offers both.
The Cherry MX Red reviewed here (sent to us by Digital Storm) is the fastest action switch of the Cherry mechanical switch series, and it shows in many aspects. First the key movement is extremely smooth and very responsive. We have yet to experience any delays in FPS single or multiplayer games, even when multiple key presses are required.
The full mechanical keyboard keys provide excellent feedback and accuracy for gaming, but it also adds incredible key travel. Be aware though, the loud clacking of the keys will not allow you to hide the fact that you're gaming from anyone in the house including someone who's on a different floor if your place has an open layout.
The Corsair Vengeance K70 has programmable backlighting. This means you can individually turn on the backlight for each key you need for a game and the keyboard's memory will remember your light map each time you turn your computer on or off, and even remembers the light map when you move the keyboard from one PC to another. This is one of the best features you'll find on a gaming keyboard if you game in the dark. We only wish that the keyboard could remember more than one programed light map for those who play different games and wish to have different keys mapped with backlighting.
The Corsair Vengeance K70 doesn't stop at just backlighting, it actually offers extra most used gaming keys "WASD" and "1-6" in specially keycaps with texture to increase tactile feedback and provide better grip while you're gaming. These specially textured keys are also contoured so that your fingers always land on them by touch without the need to look at the keyboard. When you do look at the keyboard though, these special keys stand out with red caps from the rest of the black-capped keys on the keyboard. In addition to programmable lighting, the backlight also has 4 levels of brightness setting.
The Corsair Vengeance K70 gaming keyboard offers very fast response with 100% anti-ghosted matrix, 20-key rollover and 1000Hz reporting rate. The keyboard has solid build and durable chassis, and full mechanical keys are easy to take off and install. The specially designed gaming keys have excellent texture and color that stands out from the rest of the keys on the keyboard. The programmable backlighting is the big winner here and for gamers who often play in the dark, this should be the most treasured feature as well. The keyboard has longer travel than most other gaming keyboards the Cherry MX Red has loud key clacking. If you that bothers you, you can get Cherry MX O-ring switch dampeners to shorten the travel and dampen the sound.
