iPhone Case Review: NewerTech NuGuard KX Case for iPhone 5c Review
      #46053 - 02/17/14 09:49 AM

The NuGuard KX is a serious impact-resistant case for the iPhone 5s, 5c, the iPad Air, and all iPad Mini models (iPhone 5c case reviewed). The NuGuard KX for iPhone 5c comes in six colors to match or mix with your iPhone 5c.

Size and Fit

The NuGuard KX installs in seconds, thanks to its flexible rubbery construction. While it adds very little to the width and height of your device, the protective rear padding and raised edge around the screen will approximately double the thickness of your device. The volume control and power buttons are covered, but everything else is open yet significantly recessed for protection.

Features and Quality

While the NuGuard KX does not protect against moisture, it does provide MIL-STD-810G U.S. drop protection. In order to achieve this level of certification, the case must completely protect its device from multiple 48" drops onto solid concrete (the certification video is available for viewing on the manufacturer website). Normally, I don't drop test cases for obvious reasons. Unfortunately however, my 12-year old son accidentally field-tested the NuGuard KX while climbing out of the car. I screamed like a lunch whistle because I actually heard it hit the curb, and then fall into the gutter. His phone was completely unimpressed with the 4' drop, and behaved like nothing had happened, as did my son. Yeah, it works as described. Despite this impressive level of protection, the Nuguard KX is surprisingly light, thanks to the honeycomb structure of its shock-absorbing material dubbed Hyper-advanced X-Orbing gel.

Style

The NuGuard KX comes in six colors (all the colors of the 5c plus purple) that match/complement the colors of the 5c, and has a attractive texture stamped into the back of the case, along with the product logo. Chances are, if you bought a 5c, you did so because you like its colorful personality. Rest assured, with the NuGuard KX, you will be enhancing your phone's color palette, not covering it up.

Summary

If you need serious drop protection for your iPhone 5c, and moisture isn't an issue, you would be hard pressed to find a better case than the NuGuard KX. Not only will it provide excellent protection, the bright color choices are as stylish as Apple's line of 5c cases, which aren't even in the same league as the NuGuard KX for impact protection.
