Smartphone Case Review: OtterBox Commuter Series Case for LG G Flex Review
      #46054 - 02/17/14 12:49 PM

OtterBox currently offers two of their popular case series for the newly released LG G Flex in the U.S., the OtterBox Defender Series and the Commuter Series cases. Both provide good protection to the uniquely designed phone, but they do so in different approaches. The OtterBox Commuter Series Case for LG G Flex offers protection in less bulkier form with two layers of material and a form fitting design. The Commuter Series case comes in three color options: Black, Glacier and Papaya.

Design

The OtterBox Commuter Series Case for LG G Flex has its work cut out for it. The LG G Flex's unusual curved body requires the case to contour in the same smooth curve to match the shape, and the Commuter case meets the requirement admirably. The case's interior layer is made with robust synthetic rubber that helps absorb shock from bumps and drops, and it won't scratch the phone's surface when you handle it in and out of the case. The exterior polycarbonate hard shell is solid and sturdy helping to stave off any scratches, scuffs and nicks. Both layers of the case fit the smartphone perfectly and the two layers fit each other very nicely as well.

The OtterBox Commuter Series Case for LG G Flex covers the back and sides of the phone and all the ports and buttons that don't require directly access. The synthetic rubber layer also extends to cover the bezel of the LG G Flex's large 6" display and creates a steep barrier for the curved display to protect it from any bumps to the edges of the glass and to never let the display touch flat surface when you put the phone face down, even when you flex the phone. The Commuter Series case also comes with a nice self-adhering screen protector.

There are three color options in the OtterBox Commuter Series Case for LG G Flex. The black one has black hard shell and black interior cover, the Glacier offers white hard shell and grey cover, and the Papaya version has white shell and peony pink interior cover.

Features

Though the OtterBox Commuter Series Case for LG G Flex isn't waterproof, it offers great protection against dust and lint thanks to the rubber covers on ports such as the micro USB charging/syncing port and the 3.5mm audio jack. The mics, speakerphone and the control and camera cluster on the back enjoy easy access thanks to the perfect cutouts. In fact, since the LG G Flex's power button and volume buttons live on the back of the phone, the Commuter case's cutout can actually help you position your finger better than when operating the naked phone. The case adds some bulk to the already wide phone, but not by much and it only adds 2.6 ounces.

Conclusion

The OtterBox Commuter Series Case for LG G Flex is easy to install and easy to take off. It provides excellent protection for the phone on your daily commute and time in the office or at home. It protects the large back and sides as well as ports, and gives you access to all control buttons. We like the three color combos in the series and the included screen protector. If you're looking for even stronger protection for the screen, OtterBox offers the Defender series case that has a front hard shell as well.
