help with choosing platform
      #46203 - 03/21/14 09:33 AM

hello all,

long time reader of reviews, first time poster.

my very trusty IBM thinkpad (almost ten years old) is on its last legs and i need to replace it but i'm somewhat overwhelmed with all the choices and very underwhelmed in terms of reaction towards them.

in short, a lot of choices but none seem viable. even worse, i can't decide on platform.

in terms of intended uses, my needs are pretty straight forward: i do a fair bit of word processing (word and power point) and emailing (50% of my time) and web surfing/online reading (45%), not much in terms of media (5% if that).

portability is important because being grad student i often work at the library, etc.

in terms of format, i really like the idea of a 10-12.2 tablet with keyboard and pen (the pen would be an important bonus) but i don't know how realistic that is in the long run. ideally i would combine the tablet with a keyboard that serves as cover as well. i'm an android user (on my phone) but have never used it for work/productivity.

i've also looked into convertible laptops which would likely be better on the keyboard but heavier and also have the downside of windows 8.

there are also lots of laptop options, including some with touch screens but with the similar downside of windows 8 (which i'm not fond of)

would appreciate comments, particularly from folks familiar with this level of transition. thanks!

How about the ThinkPad Yoga? 12.5", great ThinkPad feel and keyboard and the display rotates into tablet mode. If you order direct from Lenovo you can get the version with a Wacom pen.

thanks Lisa, will look into it. i had not considered the Yoga and was largely leaning towards a tablet + keyboard solution but i think the yoga might be a better fit.
