Smartphone Case Review: Trident Aegis Case for Samsung Galaxy S5 Review
      #46471 - 05/19/14 03:25 PM

The Trident Aegis Case for Samsung Galaxy S5 is a versatile case that's very protective yet very easy to use. The case provides two layers of protection and comes with a film screen protector. It's a very functional case while protecting all the ports from dust and hide the buttons under silicone cover. The case passes MIL-STD 810F for drop and vibration protection and it comes in seven color combinations.

Design

The Trident Aegis Case for Samsung Galaxy S5 is one of Trident's more rugged case yet it's not super bulky. It has two layers of protection: a soft silicone inner layer that covers the smartphone's back and sides, and a hardened bio-enhanced polycarbonate shell on the exterior. The soft silicone layer absorbs some shock damage while the hard plastic shell protects the phone from any scratches, bumps and pokes. The two layers of the case fit perfectly together, and it's very easy to install the case or take it off from the smartphone. The silicone cover also reaches the edges of the front display, creating a barrier for the screen when you put the phone face down. The softer silicone also makes it easier to work with the included film screen protector, as it doesn't push up the screen film as some hard rubber or plastic cases do when it's too tight of a fit.

The Trident Aegis Case for Samsung Galaxy S5 provides good protection for the smartphone yet it doesn't add too much bulk, though the phone is noticeably thicker while in the case. The Aegis weighs only 2 ounces. The hard shell on the Trident Aegis comes in seven color options including black, blue, gray, pink, red and Trident Green; and the inner silicone case comes in only black.

Features

The Trident Aegis Case for Samsung Galaxy S5 has cutouts for all ports but covers the buttons to help slow the wear and tear. The power button and the volume buttons are very easy to use, thanks to the "clicky" buttons on the silicone cover. The Aegis has cutouts for the 3.5mm audio jack and the micro USB charging/syncing port, but it offers plugs that block dust and water splashes from the ports. The case does expose the mics, the IR window and the rear camera/flash/heart rate monitor, but it has a dust filters over the rear speaker grill. The added thickness from the case does require you to press your finger harder on the heart rate monitor in order to get accurate readings. The front film screen protector has cutouts for the front camera, sensors and earpiece as well as the Home button. It doesn't get in the way of using the fingerprint scanner.

As with all rugged cases in Trident's line-up, the Trident Aegis Case for Samsung Galaxy S5 passes the military standard MIL-STD-810F tests which include 26 drops from 4ft onto concrete and vibration tests. It's not dust proof or waterproof however. If you need something that's even more rugged, check out the Trident Kraken AMS case.

Conclusion

The Trident Aegis Case for Samsung Galaxy S5 combines serious protection and a reasonably slim and light form. The two layer design makes the case easy to use and we like the color options on the exterior hard shell. The case comes with a film protector and the silicone cover works well with it nicely. The Aegis is very functional thanks to the cutouts, and the buttons, even though under the silicone cover, are very easy to use. The only thing that takes some effort is the heart rate monitor, which requires you to press a little harder to compensate for the thickness of the case.
