iPad Keyboard Review: Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for iPad Air Review
      #46586 - 06/16/14 03:06 PM

Second time around isn't always better, but in the case of the Logitech Ultrathin keyboard for the iPad Air, the second generation is thinner, lighter and offers more typing angles than the first gen keyboard. All that plus the same excellent typing experience comes in the same price as the first gen. The Logitech Ultrathin keyboard is currently available for both the iPad Air and the iPad mini with Retina Display, and it comes in both space gray and white to match the colors of the iPad models.

Design

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for iPad Air is indeed very slim, measuring 9.45 x 6.93 x 0.25 inches; and at 11.4 ounces, the keyboard doesn't add too much weight to your travel gear bag. The large keys and generous spacing give the illusion that you're typing on something larger than a 9.45" (width) portable keyboard. As with the previous generation, the keys on the Ultrathin have matte surface to ensure that your fingertips won't slip off when speed typing. The keyboard deck is shiny plastic that sets out the matte keys nicely. Also as with the previous generation, the Ultrathin keyboard has strong hinge with rubberized grove that holds the tablet upright, in either landscape or portrait orientation, while you type on the keyboard. But what's improved in the second gen is that the hinge now can tilt in more angles so that you can find the best position for using the iPad Air while it's sitting in the keyboard. Nice!

When you're done typing, the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for iPad Air offers a way for you to carry the tablet and the keyboard together while having the keyboard protecting the display of the iPad Air at the same time. There is a small magnetic clip on the top side of the Ultrathin that will lift up when you put the iPad Air's magnetic side near it and hold the tablet in place with the keyboard like a clamshell. The magnets are strong enough to hold the tablet in place securely, and it supports the iPad Air's auto wake/sleep feature as well. The cool design not only makes us feel good for lifting something without learning a levitation spell, but it also keeps the form slim without adding extra back cover or shell.

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for iPad Air has a micro USB charging port, a power on/off slider and a Bluetooth button, which all live on the right side of the keyboard. A small strip of LED light lives on top of the keyboard deck, indicating Bluetooth pairing and battery and charging status.

Keyboard

It's hard to find a 10" keyboard that's a dream to type on, but the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for iPad Air comes the closest in our tests. The keyboard keys are large and spacing very generous. The four-row keys have standard layout with enlarged Shift keys on both sides, good sized Return key, caps lock key and even a 1.5x delete key at its normal place. Though it's incredibly thin, the keys on the Ultrathin actually have good travel and provide surprisingly good tactile feedback. In our tests, we found it took almost no time to adjust to typing on this portable keyboard from typing on a desktop keyboard.

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for iPad Air offers shortened keys for four directional and page up/down keys, and an additional row of tablet control keys. These include multimedia control keys for the tablet, volume keys and quick one-button press launchers for the Home screen, multi-task screen, Siri, search, web browser, on-screen keyboard and camera. You don't need to press Fn key to launch these tablet apps.

Bluetooth and Battery

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for iPad Air has built-in Bluetooth 3.0 and supports Bluetooth HID profile. The keyboard goes into pairing mode the first time you turn it on and for subsequent pairing, press and hold the small Bluetooth button on the right side until the LED flashes blue rapidly. Use your iPad to pair and connected with the keyboard. In our tests, the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for iPad Air paired with our tablet easily and reconnect with the tablet automatically after inactivity or out of range.

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for iPad Air has a built-in rechargeable Li-Ion battery and comes with a 15" charging cable. The battery can last you up to 3 months depending on how long you type on the keyboard, and it goes to sleep automatic when it's not in use. It takes about 1.5 hours to charge the keyboard's battery.

Conclusion

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for iPad Air is one of the best portable keyboards for the iPad Air thanks to the intelligent keyboard layout, large keys and great tactile feedback. The design gives you a convenient way to carry the keyboard with your tablet while protecting its screen, and the added viewing angles for the tablet makes this keyboard very hard to beat. You'll have the choice of the color that matches your iPad and the freedom of wireless connection if you need to dock your iPad elsewhere.
