Let's face it, the U50 has a 900MHz Celeron-- that was state of the art for notebooks more than two years ago. The benchmarks would only serve to underscore the fact this guy is a unique and highly portable device that won't run circles around any mainstream notebook currently being manufactured. In fact, it will get dizzy just trying to watch your average Centrino 1.7GHz or mobile P4 processor notebook.

It runs MS Office XP, Age of Empires II, Windows Media Player and the bundled apps well. I would not expect it to run demanding apps like MS Visual Studio, CAD, 3D or Photoshop well. Perhaps the U70 is the one to consider, and that would be worthy of benchmarking, though it too would be at the low end of the benchmark scale.

Interesting about the Celeron.

The battery is designed differently from the Sony TR2A/3A models. It's as wide and long as the U50/U70 and clips on the back, forming the back plate of the computer. It fit very snug. I had a TR2A and that battery fit snuggly too though and never wobbled.

I'm told that they used to operate under a different name, but have changed names once or twice. I don't know them personally, other than they posted here once and wrote me directly. I found them a bit overly negative about their competition and a bit too harsh towards me.

I decided to poke around on their web site out of curiousity. Looking at their info on the U50 it states:
"It ships with Japanese character recognition software." Buyer beware, they aren't converting the U50's to English the way some of the other importers are.

On a seperate note, how long does it take to boot? Any significant difference in boot times between the U50 and U70 given their different amounts of RAM?

I just received some very informative news to people trying to decide which to buy: U50 (Celeron M 900MHz) or the U70 (Centrino 1000MHz).

I wrote to Kurns & Patrick (info@kurnspatrick.com, www.kurnspatrick.com) who also sells them to us outsiders of Japan, in regards to performance and pricing between the two. His response:

Quote:

Dear Ralph,

I can tell you know that the U70 and the U50 are almost identical in
performance except for the RAM. That is the biggest drawback. The U50
has about a 2950 score and the U70 a 3100 score. Start up, shutdown,
application opening were virtually identical. The problem is that the
512 upgrade is $400 as only Sony sells the RAM. There is only one slot
and no on board RAM.

This makes the U50 almost the same price as the U70. For this reason I
would recommend the U70 over the U50 for now or until cheaper RAM
becomes available.

The prices are U70 $2450 + $70 shipping and I can give a small discount
on the U50 $1850 + 70 shipping. I also give a $50 discount for bank
transfers.

I have both units is stock now and should so I should be able to provide
you with a unit when you decided to order.

Looks like I'll be buying the U70 from them shortly, as who knows when the OQO Model 01 or the Vulcan FlipStart PC will arrive. Let's face it - performance will be a factor. It's the reason we're looking at these devices and not mere PDAs. Owners of PDAs will also agree that some of the games and applications can be sluggish on the 200MHz ARM processors compared to todays 500 and 624MHz processors by Asus and Dell. So, if the other devices will use Transmeta or other CPUs, you can be sure they won't be nearly as powerful as the U50/U70. Just my two cents.

I have no first hand knowledge of this, but apparently Kurns & Patrick (a respected importer who has a strong relationship with Kemplar) is intending to sue Sonibee. They're claiming that Sonibee stole their English OS images and disks for the U50/U70 translation they developed. There's more here: http://forum.kemplar.com/viewtopic.php?t=77
