Sounds like your father-in-law has a new USB cable modem. Try unplugging your HotSync cradle USB cable, power down the computer, power it back up and wait until it fully boots your configuration, then plug the HotSync cradle back into the USB port. If this doesn't work, then reinstall Palm Desktop over itself, which will reinstall its USB port drivers and fix its registry entries.
