I don't recommend a Zire 72-my 72 is in for repairs, just a month old! It's back!

UPDATE 8/1/04 - My Zire 72 is back from the repair shop! Well, a refurbished unit not my old one. All is well and working just fine. They even had my name correct on the shipping label! I'll let you know how the unit performs. One thing I noticed immediately was the faster hot sync with my mac. Hmm, I wasn't even aware of the slowness problems until I hot sync'd this one!

I recently posted my disappointment with my Palm Zire 72. Here it is in a nutshell, the blue finish is peeling and flecking off, random fatal exceptions and a high hiss sound when on. Now comes the kicker. I have contacted PalmOne support on these issue's and their customer support has been lack-luster at best. Several emails back and forth with no answers and a phone number, when called, did not pickup. Finally, I got through to a real person from a number off Palm's website, and the run around began again a second time. After my insistence, they agreed for me to ship it in for repair. Mind you, the unit was purchased on 6/3/04 and I was told several times there is only a 90 day repair warranty! As I explained to them, it's just a little over 30 days from the date of purchase so I'm well within the 90 days. They fought me tooth and nail about sending it in for repair. Finally, the consumer, won out. Me. For 300 bucks I think the Zire 72 should function properly! Who knows what they'll do about this disaster of a peeling/flecking off finish. It reminds me of some automakers 1st attempts at clear coating a car in their painting process. Great idea and looks good!........for a few days! Ugh. Pulling out a Zire 72 that's missing half of it's finish at the office in front of clients certainly got their attention, not the attention I nor PalmOne was wanting.

I will keep you posted how the repair comes out.

I have been very disappointed with the poor finish quality my Zire 72 and REALLY DISAPPOINTED in Palm's customer service. (lack of service)

The good news is, if you get a unit without any problems and never have to contact customer service you're good to go!

Let me impress upon you to look at the Sony Clie's. They cost a bit more than the Palms but they always field a finely tuned product and I've always had great customer service with them.
