Hi! I've bought a Sony Vaio U-50. I was wondering how to restore the OS in case of a system crash. I've tried to connect an Asus External CD Drive model CRW5224A to the USB but it wouldn't boot a cd from there. I currently don't have a USB floppy drive so I would like to ask if the external devices needs to be from SONY or can I use a non-SONY USB floppy drive?
Thanks!

Often boot CDs use floppy sector emulation, which is something not every CD drive supports. The CD drive sold by iCube and Dynamism should work, and I have a feeling that the Sony 510U external CD/DVD burner will work since it boots every notebook I've tried!
Also check the Bios settings to make sure the U is set to boot from a CD before the hard drive.

Thanks LisaG! I've tried to boot the Asus drive using a different computer and it workd fine for bootable cd. I've also set the Sony notebook to boot from Optical drive but it seems that Sony's bios can't detect the Asus drive. Bummer! I'm trying to borrow a non-Sony FDD drive. I hope it works this time. If it won't, then I should learn to boot from the network. With the network, at least I'll have access to more resources.
