I have an Ipaq rx5915 that takes 20 minutes plus to acquire usable gps signals. after acquisition it works fine. I am considering an external antenna mounted on the autos roof. What I am considering is manuf. by Gilsson. sirfstarIII with a mmcx connector to match rx5915. Will that work? Any other ideas gladly accepted.

First (I know dumb question), have you loaded the GPS patch from the HP site?
Have you set a home location in TomTom? Doing this will set the TomTom map in the correct location (I don't know if this helps but I lock within 1 minute every switch on (even in my kitchen).

In answer to my own posting concerning lonnng gps acquisition: I purchased the gilsson antenna, installed the HP patch, and experimented where to place the magnet on the vehicle. It doesnt really matter, this antenna WORKS. 9 satellites in a very short time. Now I REALLY like the IPAQ
