Sprint Adds Hit Shows to Its On-Demand Full-Length TV Programs
      #28619 - 09/26/07 10:14 AM

With new fall series starting on TV, cell phone carriers are also getting busy signing up hit shows. Sprint announced today that its on-demand full-length TV service will carry some of the hit shows from ABC and CBS. Here is more info from today's announcement:

"As the new TV season begins, Sprint offers more on-demand full-length TV series from the major networks than any other carrier, as part of more than 50 total channels available on Sprint TV. These seven hit series can be watched on Sprint Power Vision phones ? in their entirety, at any time of the day, and from any location within the nationwide Power Vision network. The following programs will launch their season premieres both on television and on mobile within the next six days:

ABC

* "Desperate Housewives" (Sprint TV premiere Oct. 1)
* "Grey's Anatomy" (Sprint TV premiere Sept. 28)
* "Ugly Betty" (Sprint TV premiere Sept. 28)

CBS

* "CSI: NY" (Sprint TV premiere Sept. 27)
* "Numb3rs" (Sprint TV premiere Sept. 29)

These shows will be available on Sprint TV on the day after they first appear on television. Additionally, the season premieres of ABC's "Lost" and CBS' "Jericho" are expected to launch in early 2008 and will be available on Sprint at that time. Customers will generally be able to access the four most recently televised episodes for each ABC series and the most recently televised episode for each CBS series.

Sprint's record-breaking amount of on-demand full-length shows is the latest example of the increasing popularity of video on mobile phones. Analyst firm IDC predicts that the 7 million Americans who watch mobile TV today will increase more than three times to 24 million in the next three years.

The on-demand shows can be found within the Sprint TV application on the main menu of Sprint's Power Vision devices. The shows are included in the Sprint Power Vision TV Pack, which costs an additional $20 per month (casual usage charges would apply for access to these applications without a data plan).

Sprint TV's extensive selection allows customers to choose content in whatever form is best for them, including:

* on-demand (which can be watched at any time, such as the ABC and CBS episodes)
* linear (which streams continuous scheduled programming throughout the day, such as content from the Disney Channel)
* simulcast (which shows identical programming on the phone and on television at the same time, such as the "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric")
