Notebook review: MacBook Air
      #29568 - 02/06/08 03:43 AM

We review both the 1.6GHz 80 gig hard drive and 1.8GHz SSD versions of Apple's incredible new ultra-portable notebook computer. The MacBook Air is so thin and uniquely designed it doesn't even quite look like a notebook computer as we know it. Under that sturdy aluminum casing there's a full-sized backlit keyboard, 13.3" vivid, glossy widescreen display and a Core 2 Duo CPU. The Air has 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR and an iSight webcam. Did we mention it weighs just 3 lbs. and is 0.16" at it's thinnest point and it runs Vista just fine?

Does the SuperDrive work with other Macs? $99 is a lot less than I paid just a few months ago for an external (single-layer) DVD burner. In fact, you could easily spend that much just for Toast (the software, not the food).

Nope, it only works with the MacBook Air because it has higher power requirements over USB that the Air provides. This is similar to other manufacturer's drives made especially for their ultralights not working with other computers. Those often those have 2 USB cables that must be plugged into the notebook to provide that extra power or a specialty 2nd connector, for example.
