I left my macbook on for a while and then turned it off. When I tried to turn it on again I got a blank screen and then a flashing file folder with a question mark on it. What should I do? I have an apple care plan, but I'm really curious as to this flashing file folder.

Sounds like it's time to boot from the system software disc that came with the Mac and do a re-install of the OS I'd run Disk Utility first from that CD to check for drive problems.
