It sounds to me like you have a defective e740. Ours never did the things you describe in terms of hard resets and data loss.

I have never tried to activate WiFi while it's already in the cradle since the connection would be redundant with the cradle connection.
FYI: you can ActiveSync via WiFi when the unit is not cradled.
What is btu.exe?

I still think it's got some kind of internal short and is defective. I left WiFi on much of the time, and plugged it directly into the charger rather than the cradle most of the time, and it never made the unit die.

Toshiba is recalling some of their e740s due to a problem with the backup battery not getting a recharge. Don't know if that has anything to do with it, but you can contact them with your serial # and see if it is on the list.

From Toshiba, in case this applies to any of your e740 owners:

If you're having unexpected data loss problems (data is lost when battery gets low, or when removed) and your serial number is in the range of 72014641L and 92041620L, call Toshiba at (800) 788-1653 (US).

I am also an Toshiba e740 owner and have had the same problems with it dying - over and over again. I've just sent it in to service for the second time in a month. Fortunately, I still have my old Philips Nino (does anyone else even know what this one is?) It is a dinosaur, but reliable - and it uses good ole' "aa" batteries. When the power gets low - just feed it some new "aa's"! It doesn't do all the cool stuff that the newer PDA's do - but I always have my appt schedule and database of contacts with me.

RE: the Toshiba e740 - I'd love to hear from someone that has been succesfull in their working reliably. I too have had the "falls on deaf ears" response with Tech Support. I had expected much better from Toshiba in quality of product and customer care and responsiveness.
