Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 Officially Announced
      #34372 - 09/02/09 10:25 AM

Sony Ericsson didn't want Nokia to hog all the news today so they've announced the follow up to the Xperia X1 smartphone, called (surprise) the Xperia X2. It will be available in selected markets in Q4 of this year. Rejoice ATT users, there will also be an Xperia X2a for the US with ATT's 3G HSDPA and HSUPA bands. Sorry T-Mobile folks, no 3G version compatible with T-Mo's US 3G was announced but you do get EDGE.

The phone features the same panels home screen interface as the X1, but jazzed up with 3D effects. Panels provide quick access to websites and services like YouTube, Facebook and more. The X2 runs Windows Mobile 6.5, the new OS officially announced by Microsoft this week and it has a QWERTY hardware slider keyboard.

Other features include a 3.2" touch screen running at 800 x 480 (same as the Xperia X1), an 8.1 megapixel camera (oh my!)and TV out. The X2 is quad band GSM and 3G HSDPA on the 850/900/1900MHz bands (another version does 900/1900/2100MHz). For those of you who are too impatient to wait for the North American X2a version, this means AT&T users whose coverage is 850MHz will actually get 3G reception (AT&T has a good deal of coverage on 850MHz in major metro areas). The 1900MHz version should work where AT&T has 1900MHz coverage but why are AT&T's two bands split across two Xperia X2 Eurasian models? The Xperia X2a has 3G HSDPA and HSUPA on both AT&T's 3G bands plus the Euro 2100MHz band (850/1900/2100MHz).

Specs:

- Windows Mobile 6.5
- 110 megs internal storage, SDHC microSD card slot
-3.2" touch screen running at 800 x 480 resolution
- claimed talk time on GSM: 10 hours, claimed talk time on 3G: 6 hours
- networks/bands: 2 quad band GSM Eurasian versions listed, one with 3G HSDPA on the 850/1900/2100MHz band and another with 900/1900/2100MHz.
- network bands for the Xperia X2a: quad band GSM and 3G on the 850/1900/2100MHz bands.
