iPhone Game Review: Archetype
Reviewed by Spaztrigger

Have you Halo or Unreal Tournament fans out there ever wonder what it would be like to have a Halo type of game in the AppStore? Well with Archetype all your prayers are answered. This first person shooter game brings you tons of weapons, major excitement, and various stages, all the while keeping team assault and player vs. player experience intact. Fun!

Gameplay

Archetype has all the gameplay that makes an FPS game exciting. It has three game modes: Team Death match, Challenge, and Training, and you must turn on WiFi on your iDevice to play the game. Training is a good place to start and learn about the controls and weapons. Once you?ve mastered your movement and weapons, you can join a team death match game or try to wipe out other players in a challenge game. In Challenge game mode, you invite a buddy to fight with you, and it?s easy to get buddies even if you don?t already know them. The game lets you invite other players to be your buddies, and once they accept your invitation, you can send challenges and duke it out.

Team Death match is a little more complicated: you team up with up to 5 random players and kick the living crap out of your opponents, and you have 4 minutes to eliminate the players on the other team. But the process of getting into the fight is democratic. Everybody who wants to join the fight gather up in a lobby, then you view the maps available to fight in. You can approve a map or veto it, and if there is enough people veto the map, the game will show you the next one. Once the game starts, you can find both your team members and your enemy team members on a radar map, just like in Unreal Tournament, you can go find the target with guns blazing or sneak up on them which isn?t an easy feat since they can see you on their radar also. Now what?s interesting in Archetype is that you can kill your teammates as well, just grenade them or axe them, then you can be the lone victor.

Weapons in Archetype add tremendous amount of fun in every game mode. Also like in Unreal games, you walk around to find different weapons that are scattered through out the level. There are 6 weapons and 2 grenades including precision rifle, shotgun, and get this, an axe (OMG!). It?s mayhem at its best if you can grenade a group of enemy units and axe your teammate in one fight! OK, maybe that?s a little too extreme, but the tools of the trade can inspire some devious thoughts in this game. There are several ways to end the game, the best of course is to kill your enemy team 30 times, or likely you run out time. When the time runs out, the match ends instantly. You get experience points (EXP) if game ends in either of these scenarios. The third way to end a game is by quitting, in which case no one gets EXP, and that?s not good. EXP is vital in this game to earn you higher rankings and achievement medals. The game does a very good job at keeping your scores, number of kills, and the MVP of the round, very nice stats info for a long and hard battle.

Graphics

When you load up an Archetype game, you will stare at the environment thinking when did iPhone graphics look like console quality? Did I just load Halo or Unreal Tournament on my PC? All the levels look totally different and they are just fabulous to play in. Weapons look sharp and special effects are top notch. 3D graphics move very smoothly on the iDevice and controls responsive.

The game has dual visual joysticks, one to move and one to look. The looking joystick takes a few swipes to make a 360-degree turn, so keep your eye on the radar and your enemy units so that you don?t get spooked up on. Moving is very easy and you should always keep moving because your opponents can see you on the radar.

Sound

The audio quality is as good as the visual. Music and sound FX are carefully arranged: you get a heavy metal, war and military music at the title screen and game mode screen; but once you?ve stepped into a fight, it?s all quiet on the western front, making an eerie feeling that someone is about to sneak up on your, and often that?s not far from the truth. The hair in the back of your head can stand up until someone pops a gunshot or toss a grenade, then you hear explosions and the moans of someone getting killed. Excellent!

Conclusion

Archetype will simply blow you away. It?s one of the best First Person Shooters for the iOS and a shining example of what a FPS should be like. Archetype has superb graphics, tons of gameplay, good number of weapons and fun levels to play in. The multiplayer and team gameplay are excellent and very easy to set up. If you are a FPS gamer, you won?t be disappointed with this game!
