Kindle+Nook Comparison!
      #38069 - 07/30/10 03:06 PM

I am not sure if this has been brought out, but I would like to make a knowledable comparison, and see how far we go;
The differences between the Kindle and Nook, as I see them follow:
Kindle
Large selection of books(throgh Amazon only)
Long battry life due to Black and White only
No google or sideloading
Battery replacement but no SD card upgrade
Let me know what I have missed!
Present update is 2.5
Nook

Large selection of books, Google EPub and library, plus loaning of books
Complete battery replacement and SD card replacement up to 16 Mg- Simply take ooff back cover, everything is right there.
Good battery life due to color; which lessens the battery somewhat
Other things to consider;your location
On a 3G model, like a cell phone you have access, having WiFi gives you more speed
Let me know what I missed
The Nook, DID NOT QUICKLY provide software updates, we had freezing of the unit, lack of responsive updates, and not so good page turning and speed. Most of these issues have been fixed, with update 1.4
The model which I did not mention was the Sony personal Edition; this has the least selection of books etc, but has a replaceable battery and SD card expandble to 32; it uses AT+T 3G
Let me know how I did and what I missed!

I have no experience with the Kindle, but very disappointed with the responsiveness of the Nook with firmware 1.5 and the size of many of the touchpad area buttons. I can see that I am going to be staying with paper books for the most part.

You might want to check out the Sony Reader Touch Edition PRS-650 and Daily Edition PRS-950. They have touch screens for much more normal interaction vs. the small separate touch screen area on the Nook e-ink readers. They're faster and lighter as well.

I recently switched from nook to Kindle myself, and even neglecting the terrible experiences I had with Barnes and Noble support, I have to say that the nook is a vastly inferior product. The nook hasn't been updated from last year's model, so it still lacks the Pearl display found on the Kindle 3 and the latest Sonys.

The nook is also big and heavy, and slow and buggy. Yes, it has a microSD card slot, but at least on mine, I could never even get it to recognize a microSD card. And when people say the Kindle is faster, that really doesn't do full justice to the massive speed difference between the two; it isn't just that the Kindle is a little "snappier," but rather the difference is almost like comparing a race car to a bicycle.

The nook's touchscreen may look cool, but it adds size, weight, and expense without adding any significant functionality or usability.

I know there are some people who like their nooks, and supposedly the nook color is pretty neat, but in my opinion, choosing the (original) nook over the Kindle is a huge mistake. If you're a nook user, go to your local Staples and play with a Kindle 3 for two minutes, and you won't be willing to go back.
