Video review: Sanyo Zio by Kyocera affordable Android phone on Sprint
      #38771 - 10/08/10 10:41 PM

The just announced Sanyo Zio by Kyocera is here in house, and it's one of three Sprint phones to feature their new Sprint ID software customization services. The Zio is affordable by new smartphone standards and it sells for $99 with a 2 year contract. Though it's a budget phone, it has some nice specs including Android OS 2.1 Eclair, an 800 x 4800 touch screen with accelerometer and the usual trio of WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. There's a microSD card slot and Sprint includes a 2 gig card. The phone has a 3.2MP camera and a 600MHz CPU. In the package you get the charger, USB cable but no stereo headset, but the Zio is compatible with standard 3.5mm stereo headsets and those are easy enough to find.

In our video review we take a look at the Zio's attractive design, Sprint ID services and take several apps for a spin. Sprint ID aside, this a fairly vanilla Android phone and the built-in Google apps are par for the course. Sprint adds their usual services including Sprint TeleNav navigation, Sprint TV, NASAR Mobile and more.

The Zio is a decent entry-level Android smartphone, and Sprint ID will likely we most attractive to Android newbies since it installs a bunch of apps, web shortcuts and wallpapers that match your selection-- auto enthusiast, business, and so on. We do have some qualms with the 600MHz CPU and its ability to handle the beefy collection of widgets Sprint installs with and without ID, and so far we're finding the display less responsive than we'd like.

Here's our video review, and our full review will be out next week:
