iPhone Game Review: Treasure Jones
Reviewed by ninjackid

If you're familiar with developer Meridian, then you'll most likely be familiar with their popular release, Alive-4-Ever, which is known for its dark, dank, murky environments and creepy zombies, then you're in for a nice surprise with their latest title Treasure Jones, with its cute, bright colorful graphics and casual gameplay.

Treasure Jones features 35 levels in various different worlds with different landscapes and animals, in which to hunt treasure and earn cash to upgrade your character and weapons. There'll be treasure to unbury with your shovel, along with hidden treasure which require you to buy other tools to uncover, such as dynamite, or a crowbar, etc. But fortunately, you're not alone! You've got your faithful doggie, who not only helps in scaring off opposing animals, but helps as a metal-detector of sorts, and helps you locate spots where the treasure lies.

The game is a 2D side-scrolling action/adventure title, with virtual buttons to move left and right (while double tapping either will cause Jones to dash to either side), and buttons to jump and attack. When your doggie finds treasure, or when you come along a treasure chest that needs to be pried open, a bubble will appear, and you tap it to perform your action. While this sounds simple, animals get more aggressive and come in greater quantities as levels progress. And you'll need to upgrade or buy newer, more powerful weapons with cash you've earned if you want to subdue them.

When you come to the end of a world and the start of a new one, you'll need a certain amount of different jewels to unlock the way, which may require you to backtrack your path into previous levels to find the gems you might've missed. When you find a great treasure, it is added to your hall of collectibles.

All this comes together very well and makes for a well-polished casual action/adventure side-scroller to fill anyone's treasure-hunting cravings and relive the Super Mario days of old. One drawback though, like in some of these 2D scrollers, you will do some backtracking and repetitive fighting.

Graphics & Sound

The graphics are a great, cartoony style with cute, bright visuals. The puppy himself is a great work, because he just looks so cuddly.

Sound is also well done, with good sound effects when you attack an animal, the dog barking, and the music changes with each world, so as to never get boring. iPod music is also supported.

While it has minor setbacks, such as the fighting feeling repetitive, Treasure Jones is still a wonderful game all around, and is a solid, well-polished 2D side-scroller with plenty of collectibles and unlockables, and lots of upgradable weapons. The cartoony graphics are excellent, and this game is packed with enough content to last quite a while on your device.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):
