iPhone Game Review: Super Blast 2
Reviewed by JadeDragon

The Creeps are back! And this time, some of them don't just creep, they fire back! Uh, oh! Following up to the fan fav Super Blast space shoot 'em up game, Phantoom Entertainment has released Super Blast 2, a sequel with more weapons and new Creeps. And it definitely belongs in shoot ?em up gamers? libraries.

Shoot 'em up games don?t look better or more futuristic than this. Super Blast 2 takes you once again into space, but not the dark space you imagined, but brilliant with vibrant colors and full of scary looking robots that want to spread evil into the universe. Your job of course is to stop these robots, called Creeps, and fight them with everything you've got! Super Blast 2 has a simple gameplay in the genre of shoot 'em up. There are only 4 levels, but they have good lengths with non-stop of robot swarms and a big boss at the end of each world.

The stars of the Super Blast series are the enemy robots. They look surreal and have different ways of creeping. They are called Creeps mainly because they want to creep pass you. Don?t get fooled by their cute looks, if you let just one of them through, it?s level over. In the first Super Blast game you mostly had to worry about blockading their path, but in Super Blast 2 the Creeps have upped the ante a bit and come with guns, or at least some of them do. To make matters worse some guns slow your movement while others trying eagerly to pass by you. The level-end bosses are even tougher to fight. You will need to duck to avoid their fires for a long time before you can get enough shots in to take them down.

To help you with your missions, Super Blast 2 offers some weapon power-ups like throwing stars, electro zippers and more. You can also collect gold stars, and when you have three of them, you get the superhero mode with powerful weapons that cut the enemies down like a sharp knife cuts through warm butter. These upgrades fly down from the top of the screen along with the Creeps, and you roll on them to collect. Both weapon power-ups and superhero mode don?t last very long. So you will need to keep a consistent watch and collect more. There are also three super bombs you can use if you see swarms of Creeps are about to pass you. If you?ve lost health points, you can also collect health balls that add 50 points to your health.

Super Blast 2?s gameplay is set up for a quick pick up and play. There are three difficulty levels, and each level keeps its own scores. If you fail in any of the four missions/worlds, you can retry that mission. There is only one control scheme: you tilt the iDevice to move while tapping on the screen will detonate a bomb. Firing is automatic and as you collect different power ups, the weapons switch automatically as well.

Graphics & Sound

If you thought the first Super Blast looked good, you will love the graphics in Super Blast 2. They are even sharper with more details and more refined looks. You rush through the levels wondering if you were in a Pixar movie. Each of the four worlds has a different look with a different background and floating asteroids. It?s hard some times not to gawk at these background graphics during gameplay. Creeps look awesome and special weapon effects are fun to watch.

Sound tracks go very well with this futuristic looking space shooter. Fast paced music spiked with metal and techno sounding FX and voice-over helps generate even more the atmosphere of flying fast in space while blasting out some hyper realistic space robots. Each weapon has its own sound bites, making the gameplay more interesting. As the game offers minimum options, there isn?t an option for playing your own iPod music.

Though Super Blast 2 isn?t a long game, the sweet journey is worth every minute of your time. The movie quality graphics attract your attention while fast paced non-stop actions keep you coming back for more plays. You might take a while to make to the end of the game in one difficulty level, then you have two more to try. File this under the ?must have? pick up and play game for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: - 5 - One of the best looking games we?ve ever seen for the iOS.
Sound: - 5 - Sound track works well with the sound FX to help create the space shooter feel.
Controls: - 4.5 - The tilt control works smoothly. For those who prefer virtual joystick you are out of luck.
Gameplay: - 4.5 - It?s not a long game, but it?s fun nonetheless. Three difficulty levels in 4 worlds/missions.

Playing Hints and Tips:

- Some power-ups are in the line of fire. Watch out before you collect them.

- Superhero mode is totally worth getting. So collect as many gold stars as you can, though you don?t get many in the game.
