iPhone Game Review: Phoenix
Reviewed by Epox

Firi Games, a new developer, has made a bullet shooter game that stands out among the other bullet shooters in the App Store. With spot-on controls and great graphics, Phoenix is one of the best Shoot 'em Up games in the App Store.

Gameplay

In Phoenix, you start with a ship with no upgrades and from there you have to dodge bullets frantically as you battle the enemy ships to score points. You move the ship by simply tap on the screen and the controls work flawlessly. Your ship has auto-fire and you really only need one finger for this game which makes it very easy to play Every "run" will be different and this is something unique and probably one of the only Shoot 'Em Up game in the app store that does this. The bullets from your ship and the enemy ships are in a pattern and as you collect more upgrades your bullets become stronger and more frequent. There are different types of enemy ships ranging from small to big ships. You will frequently meet mini-bosses where you can put your gaming skills to a test. There are different power ups and weapons in the game which can help you beat your high score: health power ups, weapon upgrade, shields , alpha strikes and EMPs. Alpha strikes are basically a super-charged attack, while an EMP converts all the bullets the enemy is shooting at you into points that you receive.

You can store power ups for later use by holding two fingers to the screen while picking up the power up and hold two fingers again to use the power up. But you can only store one power-up at a time. There is health bar for your ship, so keep an eye out for that. There are a bunch of varying difficulties ranging from the most inexperienced player to more experienced ones. Also, the computer automatically adjusts to your skill level, so practically anyone can play the game. There are leaderboards, achievements and Game Center integration.

Graphics

While the gameplay is fun and addictive, perhaps the biggest star in the game is the graphics. The ship designs are futuristic and sharp, and hectic bullet actions are eye-catching. It?s a part of the fun in this game to stop for a second and gawk at the enemy ships or the power-up effects. Each weapon and each power up has their own animation and special FX that light up the dark sky like Chinese fireworks. The game handles the busy action and hectic fighting animation very smoothly. The only thing lacking is the single background throughout the levels, but the developer has committed to adding more new backgrounds in future updates.

Sound

The music for this game is just standard and it?s just a simple smooth music. It?s not the best music but it is very relaxing and you won?t mind listening to it. There is not much variety in the music though. You can listen to your iPod while playing the game, which is a big bonus.

Conclusion

Phoenix, is a fun bullet shooter game that can be played by all players and it gets very addicting as you try and beat your high-score. As mentioned before there are varying difficulties which makes this game really for any game and combined with easy controls and simple gameplay its perfect.

Playing Hints and Tips:

Always be on the look-out for upgrades and watch the bullets. Do not just concentrate on fighting the enemy ships. Also, store your EMPs for a really hard boss to earn maximum points.

Ratings:

Graphics: 4.5 - The graphics look great but its pretty much the same throughout the whole game.
Sound: 4 - The music is relaxing and sound FX is good, and if you get bored with the soundtracks you can play your own iPod music.
Controls: 5 - The controls work perfectly and its very responsive and work very well in this situation.
Gameplay: 5 - The game is deep and there are lots of different ways to score points and lots of different things going on at one time.
