What's Hot: Well designed, nicely built, good features.

What's Not: None.

If you watch movies, draw pictures or just reading on your iPad, you will likely need a stand that can pop up your tablet and hold it securely. We have seen stands that were rushed to the market to meet the immediate demands of the iPad users and now the iPad 2 users, and that are often missing some important elements of a good stand. Rain Design has been making laptop stands and platforms and their products look and feel like someone has thought through how the stands would be used and has covered all the elements. iRest for iPad and iPad 2 is no exception. The iRest stand is incredibly sturdy, has flexible angles and a modern look that matches the style of the iPad. The slot where you put your iPad in is big enough for either the thinner iPad 2 or the thicker original iPad. And if you are handy with a X-Acto knife, it can even work with the Motorola Xoom.

The iRest stand is built with sturdy metal and hard plastic that can hold the weight of a tablet effortlessly. The stand?s reinforced torque hinge feels strong and swivels smoothly to provide adjustable angle. The iRest is 8.6? tall and can hold most of iPad?s body in either landscape or portrait mode. You can use the iRest in two configurations. For desk user, the iRest can sit on a flat and hard surface with just the hard plastic stand on the back which has two rubber feet to prevent slipping. The iRest can also sit on your lap. How? It comes with two screwed-on extension rods that allow you to put the stand with your iPad 2 on your lap steadily. Both the front and back rods have soft cushions so that it doesn?t feel hard on your lap and prevent the stand from slipping.

The iRest raises the iPad or iPad 2 at least 3? and the hinges gives the stand up to 60 degrees of opening. This allows you to aim your iPad screen at a more comfortable angle depending on what you need it for, i.e. displaying cooking instructions in the kitchen, playing a movie on a coffee table, or browsing while you are sitting on the couch. The variety of angles makes the stand a versatile accessory that can hold your tablet in most situations. And thanks to the soft cushions, the iRest never slips in any position. And when you are done using the iRest, you can fold it flat to store it.

The iRest is designed to work with the iPad and iPad 2, but if you have other gadgets that are thin with large screens, give it try. Even though the Motorola Xoom has the same thickness as the iPad tablets, it doesn?t tapper as much, and it won?t fit the iRest easily. But the slot where your tablet is standing in is made of hard rubber material, and if you have a Xacto knife or a Dremel tool, you can carve out the front ledge enough to fit the Motorola Xoom. And even after the modification, the iRest still fits the iPad tablets nicely.

If you are looking for a sturdy and well made stand for your iPad or iPad 2, it?s hard to find anything better than the iRest from Rain Design. The stand is well designed for using your tablet in most occasions and on different surfaces. It?s surprisingly steady on your lap and it?s never slippery on any surface or position. And it works with the iPad and iPad 2 naked or with Smart Cover, and even other tablets if they are thin enough.
