I have a friend who has a Dell Axim. He told me that the d-pad goes wild in some apps. Have you seen this problem? Any fix?

Yes, you can download and install the update which fixes the d-pad problem. If you can't find it on Dell's web site, email me. I will send you the file.

Try going to Dell's support web page. You'll probably have to register and enter your Axim's serial number if you aren't already in their database. Then it'll show you all available updates for your particular Axim. I believe the D-pad updater was rolled into a larger update that fixed additional problems quite a while ago, so it probably isn't available separately anymore.
