What's Hot: Form fitting hard shell case, built-in stand, good design.
What's Not: Adds some heft to the tablet.
The Speck FitFolio Cover for iPad 2 is a form fitting case in a portfolio style. It's really two cases in one: a hard shell molded case to house the iPad 2 and a soft leather cover with cardboard insert to cover the tablet's display and provides a stand. The design is clever and the build is solid.
The two-piece made a lot of sense if you want to protect the entire tablet and keep the case slim. The Speck FitFolio Cover looks and feels very slim and fits the iPad 2 like a glove. It weighs 8.75 oz with the Polycarbonate fit case and the cardboard inserted PU leather. The hard shell holder has soft surface and won?t scratch your iPad 2 when you put it in or take it out of the case. Though the hard shell doesn?t wrap around the iPad 2?s edges, it holds the tablet securely. We tried dangling the iPad 2 face down while in the hard shell case, the tablet didn?t move or fall out.
Connecting with the hard shell case on the back is a leather back cover that wraps around and covers the display. The front cover has a very soft microsuede lining that won?t scratch your tablet?s screen, and it also has 4 groove lines for popping up the iPad 2 in four different angles. The hard shell case has an extra lip on the side that sits on the front cover that makes it easier to stabilize the tablet when popped up. The front cover can also fold backward, and there is a flip cut in the cover that allows the iPad 2 to stay on its back in a yet another angle.
The Speck FitFolio Cover for iPad 2 comes in black, red and grey.
The Speck FitFolio Cover for iPad 2 has some very nice details that make using your tablet easier while in the case. There are large cutouts in the hard shell for sync/charge port and speaker grill. Since the case isn?t light, it?s unlikely you will be able to dock the iPad 2 while it?s in the FitFolio, but you will have plenty of space to use any wire or cable with the 30-pin connector while the tablet is in the case. The side buttons are exposed as well and the cutouts are large enough for you to use these buttons comfortably. The top and back cutouts for the power button, camera, mic and audio jack are also well designed.
The Speck FitFolio Cover for iPad 2 doesn?t use any magnet in its case, so those who worry about their credit card safely you have nothing to worry about with this case. The front cover comes with a thin yet strong bungee cord that can latch onto the hard plastic holder on the shell case to keep the cover securely closed. And this set-up works both ways: it can keep the cover securely shut or when you fold the cover back, the bungee cord can secure the cover to the back to get out of your way when you are using the iPad 2.
The Speck FitFolio Cover for iPad 2 stands out thanks to its sturdy hard shell and strong front cover yet the case stays incredibly slim. The case doesn?t add much to the size of your tablet but it does add noticeable weight. And if you want the solid hard shell protection and strong insert to the leather cover, that?s the price you will have to pay. The FitFolio Cover has a nice design that can stand your tablet in many angles and keep it steady. The case has cutouts to all ports and buttons and the bungee cord and the closure latch are a unique and very useful design. The materials look and feel solid and the price is very reasonable.
